Richard (Rick)'s Story
Life
If your a 62 grad from Victory High School, Clarksburg, no, I didn't graduate with you but I went to Adamston from 1950 through 1959 when I left for St. Albans so I know a lot of you. I have posted some pics on the Adamston Pages.
I do engineering work. Just like it said in the St Albans 62 year book, wants to be a draftsman, only now it's on a computer.
I have six grandkids out of my five children. Spent 17 years between wives! Glad we had all those kids when we were young! Married for the second time for 14 years and counting. Still into hot rods, vintage road racing my Corvair, music, photography, videography and just having a hell of a good time at life. Never underestimate the power of ignorance! Oh, I left out frequent naps!
College
Actually, I only attended "Harvey High" (University of Charleston, aka Chuck U, WV) one year. I took night classes because I worked during the day. I took advanced mechanical drawing and descriptive geometry from Mr. Pennington. Today I am working in engineering using that education. I joined the Air Force the next year because you couldn't get a decent job back then if you still had your military obligation ahead. I don't regret that decision today.
Workplace
I have worked in the engineering and design business ever since I got out of the Air Force and Vietnam in 1967. I learned the trade so to speak at FMC in So. Charleston for seven years. I then moved around the country as a "Job Shopper" working for contract engineering firms until I remarried in 1994. I was a direct employee with Augusta Eng. in So. Chas. for eight y...Expand for more
ears (2000-2008) and I was satisfied staying in one place but, money talks. I'm still working with a lot of old friends from the early days in the business and it's great!
2010 UPDATE: Laid off again and maybe retired but won't admit it yet. Filed for Social Security while there is still some left! Having a hot summer!
Military
I joined the Air Force in 1963 because you couldn't get a job then if you had a military obligation. Most of my family are military vets. After boot camp in San Antonio, TX I went to Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO for technical training as a Weapons Mechanic. That was a lot like college as we lived in the old cadet barracks which had rooms as opposed to the usual open bays. After we graduated tech school I took a leave and went home to marry my high school sweetheart. That lasted for 13 years and four kids worth.
My first permanent base was Suffolk Co. AFB on Long Island, NY. I was there until 1966 when I got orders to go to Vietnam. Actually I'd had orders twice to go to Thailand but my wife was pregnant with our second child and I could refuse the assignment. After my son was born however they wasted no time in whipping a Vietnam Assignment on me. I spent my year in Vietnam at Bein Hoa Air Base and a 10 day TDY at Phan Rang Air Base.
After being out of the military for awhile I joined the local Air National Guard unit in Charleston, WV for several years working in the Civil Engineering unit. All three of my sons are former Marines and two of them were in the Gulf War. Our family has a proud military history going back to the Civil War.
