Richard's Story

Attended a one-room school house (Stoney Run) in Dillsburg for 1st grade the second time. The first time was at Hillside in New Cumberland. Attended Northern Elementary in Dillsburg for 2nd-6th grades. Moved back to New Cumberland for junior and senior high schools. Went to Penn State York Campus for one year. Worked for the West Shore School District until July 1974. Teamed-up with older sister's husband to work at Dickerson's Prestressed Concrete near York until I joined the Army in February 1975. I went to Fort Knox, KY; Fort Riley, KS; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD; Stuttgart, FRG; Fort Benning, GA; Duluth, MN; and Fort Ord, CA until July 1987 for my Active Duty tour. I had become a Born-again Christian on 29 December 1979 while stationed in Germany (FRG). I had stopped in Omaha, NE to visit a family who had "adopted" me in the Christian faith, whom I had met while at APG, MD. I had applied to Grace College while in Omaha, but continued on my way back to Pennsylvania. I received my acceptance letter there and had three days to return to Omaha. I had joined the Army Reserves upon leaving Active Duty Army and glad I did. There was a ca...Expand for more
valry unit near by and I got a Motor Pool maintenance position. I eventually moved into an instructor slot for truck driving and did that for thirteen years. I had to retire in 2013 when I became 60 years old. I had been a Reservist for over 27 years. I met my second wife, Toya, at Grace College and we will be married for 28years on June 5th. We have one son, Christian, 29 years old. My civilian job after not graduating from college was a steel fabrication shop next to my Reserve unit. I had retired from there June 2015 just before our 25th wedding anniversary. I was a welder and later operated various machinery to make parts to erect structural steel for buildings and bridges. I was back at DWSteel, part-time for 2.5 years. I drove a van for more than a year for a Christian daycare. Currently retired again. Wife is fighting inoperable brain cancer. I currently attend Christ Community Church in Omaha and did storytelling to preschoolers Alternate Sunday mornings. We were caring for two grandchildren from Toya's daughter from a previous relationship for more than 5 years. This is April '18 and I am quickly approaching 65 years of age.
