Richard's Story
I was drafted in 1971 into the Army and reenlisted for 6 years. I served as an enlisted Medical Laboratory Technician and eventually reached the rank of SFC. I left the active duty in 1979 and joined the reserves where I became Special Forces. I then moved back to California and enrolled in Cal Poly where I earned my BS in Microbiology and attended ROTC while in the National Guard. I becaem a Helicopter pilot in the Calif. National Guard. I then attended Cal State Fullerton for my Master's iin Laboratory Management and was commissioned a 2LT in the Guard and flew out of Los Alamitos while working as the Laboratory Director of Monrovia Hospital. I was recalled to active duty in 1984 as a Microbiologist and served as Laboratory Director in Brooke Army Medical Center, then commanded the 10th Medical Laboratory in Germany. Command and General Staff College and obtained a PhD at Cornell University majoring in Immunology. I then worked as a research scientist working on biological warfare vaccines and therapeutics and became an expert in aerobiology of bacterial infections and animal models for testing. I retired from the Army in 1999 but stayed as a GS-15 senior scientist until 2009 and retired to Hungary. I have had 3 wives and have 2 children Alexander and Sylvie from my second marriage. Both live in the US and Alex attends George Mason University and Sylvie attends Temple University. I am married to a wonderful woman who is also on her third marriage. She moved to the US from Russia in 1989 and now we live in Balatonfured Hungary a beautiful resort village on the largest fresh water lake in Europe Lake Balaton. I am still working as a scientific consultant for both the US Army and Navy.
