Richard's Story

Life I am Dick Curtiss of the class of '58, West High School. My parents, Richard E. & Rosabelle Curtiss were also graduates of West High School (1938). I resided at 265 S. Burgess Ave. on the Hilltop. My neighborhood friends were Ed Fredendall '59, Al Daft '59, Gary Smith '58, John Stetler '56 & Dan Scoles '56. I will also always remember Susie Davis '60 as a special girl-next-door. I stumbled around at OSU trying to find a direction & after graduation became an elementary teacher in Southwestern City Schools. In 1965 I went to Atlanta to become a guidance counselor, in the NDEA program at Atlanta University & it was a wonderful experience. In another wonderful experience I met Brenda Kay Newman from Maryville Tenn who became my wife on Aug 21, '66. As of this writing we have been married 41 years. In 1966 I returned to Southwestern City Schools as a guidance counselor. I became a counselor at Westland High School just west of Columbus in 1970 & retired in 1993. Brenda & I have lived in Lincoln Village North for 35 years. It has been a great place to raise a family. We have a son Danny, Westland High School '88; he & his wife Ginger & sons Drew (5)and Dean[2] live nearby - Dan is an office manager for a trucking company. Our daugher is Christina Shore, Westland '85, she & her husband Troy also have one son Curtiss M. Shore (8). They live nearby as well. We are blessed to have a great extended family with 3 terrific grandsons. My daughter's career path must have been written from some sort of novel, as the name on the doorplate of my guidance office at WHS for nearly 25 years, now bears the name: CHRISTINA SHORE-my daughter. Since retirement I worked 5 years at Tolles Technical Center (Plain City), Hilliard Davison, Hillard Darby & Gahanna Lincoln High Schools. I would not trade these people & experiences for anything - as well as all my time at Westland. My only curre...Expand for more
nt job is as a bus tour guide for Prodigy Tours. We take student groups to Nashville, Chicago, New York, Gettysburg, Williamsburg, & Washington, DC, mostly in the Spring. Sometimes as I trek uphill in Arlington National Cemetery to the Unknown Soldier with 85 fourteen year-olds I begin to feel all of my 67 years, but their enthusiasm and excitement is catching and picks me up. I really enjoy genealogy research & have been in a lot of cemeteries. It sounds creepy, but it is a lot of fun to solve these crossword puzzles of life. My other current activities include: I am still the PA announcer for WHS sports-35 years, I am vice-president of Southwest Public Libraries Board (what an oxymoron), but I are it! I am president of St. Paul Lutheran Church Council in New Rome. Before this begins to sound like a resume, lets move on. I want to close with some words about West High School & the class of '58. I learned so much from my classmates & teachers. Many times in my years as an educator, I drew upon recollections of you people & your personalities. There were times I needed the humor of Larry Gress & Dickie Distlehorst, the classy manner of Dave Bunner, George Anderson, Fritz Ricker or Pete Trott; the clever quips of Jack Nachman or Jerry Francis; the reserved intellect of Barbara Brown or Mike Mickelson; the leadership of Shirley Anderson, June J. ,or Annette Bates; the artistic talent of Jim Hardy, Bob Arthur & Steve Miller; or the engaging personalities of Anne & Rhonda,Whitey and Judy, Jim C, Dave Mack, Calvin, Janie L, Jerry Galloway, Robbie and Marty, Mary Jo, Danny Plummer or Danny Grosh,Gary S.-Gary E.-Gary F.and Bill Eckle to name just a few. I would mention the other beautiful girls in our class but with so many I could get into trouble. They are rivaled only by the girls of '61. Thanks to all of you for contributing so much to me over the years. More than you know.
