Richard's Story
I am retired, playing in a band, and practicing tai chi. I was a history teacher for nine years at the Highlands School in Irving, Texas. Until 2005 I taught history for twelve years (1993 - 2005) at the college level. This was for the Franciscan University of Steubenville European semester abroad program, which was located in a 14th century Carthusian monastery in the village of Gaming, Austria (about two hours west of Vienna). The courses I taught there were Medieval History, French Revolution & 19th Century Europe, The History of Austrian Culture and Civilization, and Western Civilization. I was also assistant director of the Austrian campus for the first five and a half years I was there, and I was director of the program for the last six and a half years I was there. Otherwise, my only other teaching experience was that many years ago I taught for one year (1973-74) in an Austrian high school in the village of Radstadt, which is about 75 kilometers south of Salzburg. There I taught English as a foreign language to Austrian 9th and 10th graders. The year after that I went off on a grand adventure to India, traveling overland from Vienna to Istanbul by train, and then by bus across Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. mas on the beach in Goa. Bought jewelry in New Delhi and sold it in Salzburg for thrice what I paid for it and that paid for that whole year of travel in exotic lands. I have had other careers as well. I was a life insurance salesman for three years in Dallas, I was in retail management for seven years (mostly in Seattle), and I was in insurance claims for seven years in San Antonio. I was born in Marshall, Texas, grew up in Texarkana, Texas, and went to the University of Dallas for my B.A. in German (class of 73). After a seventeen year business career I decided to go to grad school late in life, and that is when I got my M.A. in History from UTSA (class of 93). In 2019 my wife and I will celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. We were married at the U.D. chapel. My wife is also a U.D. grad, as are my three daughters and my son is a Franciscan University grad. We have four children, and five grandchildren. My hobby is that I am a blues guitarist; you can check out the CD I released at CDBaby.com/fougerousse.
