Richard's Story

Like the Grateful Dead once sung, What A Long Strange Trip It's Been ... I ran away from home shortly after graduation. Bad deal there and enough was enough. I headed to Canada to some commune written on the back of a matchbook. But I got treated like a draft dodger, so I came home for a bit. I joined the Navy in 73 and got out in 75 and well... sorry folks, I just didn't have anything there to go back home to. So I hit the road and traveled around North America for a while. Wound up out west in the mountains. Fell in love a few years later like most of us do or did. I got two beautiful daughters out of the deal. l raised the girls, 2, as best I could as a single dad... One's a Biologist and the other is a very fine mom of a bright little star that was born with a few problems... things happens... But as I tell them every Christmas, "Ya know? You girls did alright, despite having me for a dad!" Heck they don't come with any instructions! I just tired to do better by them than I had to go through, and I think I did. Well during all that upbringing, I fell in love again, buried her about six years back now. Got another daughter and son, hers from priors, out of it to hang on to. And I have a small covey of grand kids, 5 so far. Supported the kids by being a journ...Expand for more
eyman in several trades. I opted for tile and stone though for my life's work, and I ran my own business successfully for seventeen years. I built a lot of pretty stuff over the years and feel pretty good about that. For me, It ain't about the money or things, it's about the ties we make with family, friends, and those that are put in our path that make this trip on this rock we call Earth worth while. That to me, is where the real quality of life begins and ends. Over the years I've remembered the neighborhood. Barcelona's, The Bench, The Pump House, Belmont Hill and of course high school., "Coach Hollis, Mrs. Marsh, Mr. Fran's class, and of course Mr. S's History class... good folks and good teachers all, despite what I and some others put them through. As well, I remembered as many of you that roamed halls, hung out on the football field at lunch, home rooms, walking the track with friends, and of course out in the parking lot, along side me 'back in the day'. I do hold your memories dear to my heart. So to all who remember me and all that inadvertently or unfortunately, stumbled upon this wordy story, I wish you this from the bottom of my heart. "May all your dreams but one come true, My Friends. So you may ALWAYS have a reason to look forward toward the future."
