Richard's Story
I turned 70 this November and life continues to inspire and challenge. I spent most of my professional life involved in emergency preparedness in the nuclear energy field. Since retiring in 2012, I picked up the occasional consulting contract in that field, and found that monetarily rewarding, however it’s still work. I’ve never wanted my career to define who am, so I’ve embraced that old adage, “Life’s too short.” These last few years after retirement have afforded me the time to refine my perspective on who I am and what in life really matters. Sitting out on my deck with a cup of coffee looking out over an open meadow while my dogs fruitlessly chase squirrels up trees, is a comforting way to begin my day instead of flying or driving out to a new job. Living in Door County Wisconsin renews my love of the outdoors and appreciation of being close to big water. d September and come out after the tourists' exodus to the south. Although children have not been part of my life, collies and cats have helped keep me centered. My love of travel has taken me throughout the continental US, as well as all of the major Hawaiian Islands and beyond. Favorite vacations have been Ireland in spring, Alaska in summer, winter in Norway, and I just returned from an amazing trip to Iceland. After being drafted in 1970, I lived in Germany for a year and a half. Except for two years in northern Illinois and a five year hiatus in Iowa, Wisconsin has been my home for the last thirty odd years (GO PACK!).
For the most part, life has been kind to me, and it is my wish that you have been fortunate in life as well. To my good friend Barry Glaser; no matter how hard you try, you will never be a potential "has been". You're beyond that! To Tobi Bernstein, my heartthrob since Haugan, I think you.ve forgotten me. To Danny Sansardo; I miss your friendship and your philosophical view on life! And to Rhodie Humbert; everyday we wake up on the right side of the dirt shows our desire to race one another in walkers some day!.
