Richard's Story

Family and friends are most important. Giving back and sharing are activities that have occupied most of my 15 yrs. in retirement. From Habitat, working with the local university in fund raising, raising funds for local non-profits, to arts related activities; organizing and playing in a symphony orchestra, forming a dixieland band and chamber music groups. We have traveled extensively, in Europe and all over the US and Canada in our motorhome. We sold our first retirement home when I was 69 and traveled for two years in our motorhome. We have resettled here in the beautiful hill country of central Texas. We just finished building our last (I hope)retirement home in a golf community in Kerrville. Our immediate plans call for more traveling, active involvement with the various arts activities in Kerrville and visiting and renewing old friendships. We missed the 50th reunion because we were closing on the sale of our house, but expect to attend the 55th. A word or two about this MG. A local professor at SW Texas Univ. placed an ad in our local paper. I ended up buying this 1950 MG without giving it much thought. It turned out to be a cute, basketcase. I reluctantly began taking it apart for a rebuild, a process that took many years and way too much money. It's back together and runs great, well, as good as 1950 cars ran. So my wife, Barb, a graduate of Washington High School, and I take it out on sunny days. It's fun to drive and gets a lot of thumbs up. I continue to stay active with music. I am a...Expand for more
board member of the Symphony of the Hills and manage their marketing and advertising. We have contracted with the New Orleans Preservation Hall Band to play with the symphony this Jan. Although I have played the clarinet almost all my life, I renewed my study and playing since retiring. Those of you who have played in the past and continue to do so now will understand the satisfaction that music provides, either as a bystander or participant. The several hours I spend playing almost everyday pass much to quickly. A benefit of playing is that you meet some pretty cool people and groups. Although we do get up to Wisconsin to visit friends and relatives, our travels each year always includes the SW, primarily Sante Fe. One of the oldest cities in the US, it is filled with a variey of music and arts for every taste. After that, it's anywhere there's a road. The long term plan is to continue traveling until I can't see the road, stay on the road, or someone steals the car keys.... Update, still have my car keys.. however, they are now located in Santa Fe NM. We relocated from Kerrville TX in the fall of 2010 and now live in an adobe styled home in Santa Fe. Instead of spending time here on vactions, we decided to live here on vacation. We are located between the Sange de Cristo and Jemez mountains, enjoying beautiful, sunny days and a year with distinct seasons. I think this will be our last "retirement home". Joined the oldest band in Santa Fe, going back to 1869 and play in a "wind" orchestra.
