Richard's Story
I was born and raised in the bottoms. I lived my last 8 years in Uansa Village.
On October 20th 1960 I left home to join the U.S. Air Force. They flew us to Lackland AFB, Texas. I spent the customary 8 weeks in basic training then had the privilege of going to 100th Bomb Wing Hq, Pease AFB, NH as an Education Specialist. After a few months in that field I had the opportunity to transfer into the Graphic Arts field in the 817th Air Division. I took the transfer and began my career as a Graphic Artist. After a few years with the 817th AD I took a promotion and transferred to the 509th Bomb Wing, still at Pease AFB.
(note: The 509th Bomb Wing was the Bomb Wing responsible for dropping the bombs on Japan that ended WWII, it was also the Bomb Wing in 1947 that was involved with the so called flying saucer incident at Roswell, NM.) (I'm not allowed to say any more under penalty of death. Ha Ha!!!)
It was a very very unique and exciting Bomb Wing, I enjoyed it very much and hated to leave. I spent a total of 5 years at Pease AFB, NH.
In November 1965 I was transferred to Anderson AFB, Guam. My primary position was Graphic Artist, my secondary job was CBR weapons specialist, not a fun job at that. While on Guam, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Philippine...Expand for more
s, Thailand and Viet Nam.
In May 1967 I transferred to March AFB, Riverside CA where I spent the rest of my time. During this period I had the chance to meet Bob Hope, Gen Jimmy Stewart and Charels Schultz. I was discharged in July of 1968 and moved to Haverhill, MA where I still reside.
After the Air Force, I got a job with Raytheon Company in Massachusetts as a Graphic Artist. During my 40 years with Raytheon, I had the opportunity to travel the world. In 1975 my family and I traveled to Saudi Arabia where I held the position as Assistant Art Director. My family and I spent nearly 8 years there. During that time we took our yearly vacations traveling through Europe.
My children had the opportunity to get a great private education and my two oldest daughters graduated from Marymount International School in Rome. My oldest son graduated from Notre Dame International School in Rome. My two youngest ones were not so lucky, or at least that is what they say. We returned to the states in June of 1983 and resumed our lives.
I kind of survived several layoffs and finally retired May 1, 2008, and have been enjoying it ever since. Oh well, that's all folks.
Oh by the way I married my wife Sheila in 1962 after chasing her until she caught me and we are still married to this day.
