Richard's Story

Life... By some twist of fate my life was not cut short in my younger years. During my school days and for many years thereafter, I was a partier. Many fond memories remain of those times... During my 20's work took on more importance and I chose to apply myself. In my early 30's I found my life partner and we settled down in Seattle. We did what many do, bought a house filled it with stuff and worked to support that life. Neither of us had kids so we got big dogs instead. By my late 30's I began to realize that too much of our life was being wasted working. We both had good jobs that we loved. But found it very difficult to schedule vacations. While on a rare trip to the tropics we decided to find some way to travel south more often. Upon our return a chance get-together with a co-worker introduced us to sailboats and blue water cruising…a year and a half later we sold the house, the cars and all our stuff. Then quit our jobs and climbed aboard "Irie" with the dogs. We sailed around the Puget Sound that summer and then in the autumn of ‘97 headed into the Pacific and turned south. Harbor hopping down the West Coast was very memorable. This new life was full of discoveries every day. We spent New Years Day ‘98 snorkeling with new friends in an anchorage on the Baja. We all marveled at where we were and what had gotten us there. We would be on that boat cruising Mexico and making new friends for the next six years. We had found the meaning of life, as we saw it. We came back to the U.S. in ‘03 to energize the cruising kitty and plan our next dream (goal). Decided to settle in Tucson and took jobs in our former fields. Lo and behold, the dedication we had in the past was now lost. We had to find something that suited us after all the adventure. On a suggestion from cruisers whom had also returned to the workforce, we became truck drivers as a team. For five years, '06-'10 we worked May thru October driving, then November thru April we’d go RV'ing. We still had our VW Adventure Wagon camper van at first. Sold that for a Suburban and travel trailer. Where better to RV in the winter than south of the border. Going to the same places that we once visited by sailboat. Often would run into old cruising buddies and meet a new group of land travelers. Sometimes it really is a small world. In May of 2011 instead of driving we moved back to Seattle to help with my wife's father who was needing assistance. It sure was pretty there, when the sun was out. Once again we tried to fit into our new surroundings, being caretakers and working various jobs. Eventually he needed to go into care facilities. We moved into his house, sold the trailer then proceeded to bring the house back after a long time of neglect. Passing the time, as we do. It hasn't been all bad. I've learned a new hobby while living here, home brewing beer!! Goes very well with one of my favorite pastimes. Drinking Beer!! In ‘17 we bought another trailer and began spending our winters in Mexico again. That was good for two years. We then sold that trailer and purchased a motor home in mid ‘19. I decided to retire and start collecting those monthly checks that I never thought I'd ever see. When we leave for the winter this autumn, I don't think we will come back in the spring. It's time to get back out there a see where this motor home takes us. Dec ’19, Made the 2600mi trip to our winter hideout. Now enjoying the warm hospitality of our neighbo...Expand for more
rs on the southern side of that wall. Then the C19 pandemic hits the world. We stayed in Mexico, where we felt safe, until mid-May. Now that we are back in the US our plan to visit National Forests all summer seems very prudent. Oct ‘20, That went well. Spent our summer between 6200’ and 9300’ elevation in Arizona avoiding fires, heat and C19. Our coach performed very well. Luxury camping, as we call it, in dispersed campsites. Which are no more than a place to park with a fire ring of rocks in a beautiful setting of mostly Ponderosa Pine forest. Back in Tucson, doing upgrades and waiting for the southern border to reopen. Jan ‘21, We found the border to be open and crossed on 12/11 taking all the normal precautions. Arrived at our usual beach hangout a couple days before Xmas. Crowds are less and the number of Canadians who made the trip are only a few. Rather than the majority. Very strange year here with so few Norte Americanos. Fortunately the Mexicans are still vacationing. We have not heard of any C19 cases locally. Jun ‘21, Arrived back in AZ after nearly 6 mos. Finalized the sale of our boat (sad day). Got our J&J shots. Survived the 115F heat in Tucson then moved to southern Utah to avoid the heat event in the NW. Great weather, scenery and monsoon rains. As heat lessened we were able to move up to Kalispell. We move as the weather dictates. Have been able to keep to areas with afternoon showers and cooler temps. However the smoke in these areas was thick at times. The rain helps for a short time. In Idaho now, moving toward Boise soon. Oct ‘21, Arrived back to Tucson. Great travels through the western states. Spent six weeks winding down. Then off again. Arrived back to our winter hangout in mid November. Still a bit too warm. Now a month later, perfect weather. This season I brought an abridged version of my brewery. Should be sampling my first IPA in a couple days. Apr ‘22, Brewed five, 5 gal batches. Enjoyed having home brew on tap all season. In Mazatlán enjoying the spring weather for a few weeks. Oct ‘22, Back in Tucson after summer travels to NM & CO. The monsoons were fabulous. So much rain in areas that needed it. Jan ‘23, Back in Mex since late Oct. I’ve brewed 3 Hazy NEIPAs, 2 with coconut. Yum. Pandemic must be in the past, the Canadians have returned!! The town we stay in is completely overrun with them now. 3/17/23 St. Patty Day. Season is winding down. Almost time to pack up and head north. Seems that we missed one heck of a winter on the west coast. Will be an interesting summer of travels. 5/5/23 Cinco de Mayo. Spent Semana Santa (Easter Week) in Mazatlán with friends. What a great place that is. Crossed the border with one day to spare on our 180 day visa. The drive north threw a couple wrenches at us. Worn throttle cable on coach and blown tire on the trailer that carries our car. We are in Tucson until we move to California for the summer. I hear the runoff is moving gold in the rivers. I loved visiting the gold country when younger. Oct ‘23, Had a wonderful summer visiting California. All the rivers running and reservoirs full. We gold panned all along the the foothills in the Gold Country. Found very little. Jan ‘24, Back into our favorite campsite in Mexico. Cooler this year. Must be the El Niño effect. I’ve brewed twice and it’s so nice to have a nice IPA rather than just Mexican lagers. The whales have returned for us to watch their antics at sea.
