Richard's Story
Graduated Evander Childs in Jan. 1953, although I was in the June 53 Class and then Hunter College in June 1957.Attended PS21 & PS113 grammar schools. I worked part time at Charlie Moles on 225th and WP Road at 13 and then for Firestone Tire in the Fordham Rd store, in the Bronx, starting at age 15...while also working at the Hunter luncheonette in Manhattan at night at 18. Upon Graduation, retired from the luncheonette business and went Full Time with the Firestone in their NY offices as an asst operating mgr. Enlisted in the Navy Reserves in 1954 but was never activated, discharged in 1962. Married 1957 and still married...to Chris Alessi (New York Sunday News Coloroto section....Typical American Girl winner...Sept 1957.) I moved out of Firestone District Offices into sales, eventually managing two stores, one in Norwalk, CT (1960 & lived there) and one in Babylon, LI, NY (1962 & lived in Plainview)...Had two girls during that time, Victoria (1960) and Deborah (1962)...promoted to Supervisor of Stores in 1964 for NY area and then District Manager i NY NJ....eventually rose to VP Eastern Division ...which covered the eastern seaboard (14 states) to parts of North Carolina and west to Ohio border. Attended several schools for post grad management courses thanks to Firestone. Left Firestone in 1972 after too much traveling to open my own Tire dealership in White Plains, NY in 1972. Lived in Yonkers-Crestwood-Scarsdale from 1968 until retiring 12/31/97. During this period I was the President of my Country Club for three years, ran a political campaign in 1976 for the Mayor of Yonkers and become involved in many community affairs, including coaching girls softball for several years. I was involved in the Westchester County Chamber of Commerce serving as the Government Affairs Chairman on the Small Business Council. Sold eight store tire and auto service chain in 1997 and retired to Florida. where I had been a snow bird since 1986. After two years of boring retirement (You can only play so much golf) I went to school again...this time for a Real Estate License. I now handle referrals only to keep me as busy as I want to be. Daughter Victoria is married and living in Florida with her husband. Bob I have two granddaughters, Cassi and Tegan. My daughter Deborah lives a few miles from us in Florida. I still favor jazz, standards and big bands. I still think Sinatra was the best closely followed by Bennett, Matt Monroe, Nat Cole and several others....my favorite female vocalists are Shirley Bassey, Dinah Washington, June Cristy and Chris Connors. I no longer play golf ,as I have lost interest in it. I am very active in community affairs. I am Chairman of the Firestone National retiree group known as the Gum Dippers. I also produce a quarterly newsletter for the retiree group. We have a four day reunion every year and I get to see all the old time Firestone family. I have been on several boards down here in Florida and currently serve on our condo board and condo recreation committee. I miss old friends and like communicating with friends and acquaintances from the past. Moving around so much, and being so involved over the years, one loses track of people that they should not have. Now is the time to find them and reconnect before it is too late. I have a friend who says "the best friends I ever had was when I was 13 years old" a lot to be said about that. I had two brothers that preceded me at Evander; Albert, class of 44 (deceased) and John, Class of 47 (deceased) and many cousins;
Mucciolo's, Calvano's, Siriani's, Fierro's, Raimondo's, we all lived in the same neighborhood...remember those good old days when you were surrounded by family and the fun visiting on holidays??? I still love New York, there was no where like it in the world!!!! 2001-2018, Realtor: Unable to just work on hobbies and play golf, returned to work to keep busy and interact with people again. Began new career, in Real Estate, after a 4year hiatus.

Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio
1969, Vice President Eastern Sales Division, Responsible for all sales, retail, commercial, wholesale, military, government in fourteen states. Youngest person, at 33 ever appointed to this position at Firestone other than Raymond Firestone. Managed fourteen district Managers who performed functions outlined in previous positions I held outlined below. Position included public speaking and presentations at various events. This division had it been an independent company had sales large enough to make it one of the Fortune 500 Companies.
1967, New York District Sales Manager: In charge of retail sales and wholesale tire operations in the New York Metropolitan area, which included New Jersey and Connecticut. Responsibilities included 39 retail stores, five retread plants, and 12 managers of wholesale operations and a staff of 26 people.
1966, Manager of Stores, Eastern Sales Division: Managed 256 Company Stores in 14 sales districts and 14 states with 1,300 employees.
1964, Store Supervisor: supervising 18 stores and 3 Retread Plants. This function included negotiating labor contracts with the various unions in the stores, handling our advertising, hiring, college recruiting, supervising store managers, employee training, inventory control and all other aspects of retail store management. This marketing group went from 50th.in profit in the nation to 1st from 1964 to 1966.
1957-1964. Upon graduating college began career with Firestone, working as an assistant Office Manager, in the New York District Sales Office. Left operations and moved into sales working through all in store sales positions and outside sales calling on trucking companies and service stations eventually managing two company stores.
1954-1962 United States Naval Reserve. Enlisted 1954 and was not accepted for active duty when Pres. Eisenhower deferred all college students.
1951-1957 Part time: while attending High School and College, at Firestone in all phases of retail store sales and operations including working in service department. I also worked nights in a luncheonette as a counter man and close up person. I also worked in construction.
