Richard's Story

How does a New York City boy end up in the sleepy suburbs of Spartanburg, South Carolina? How does an introverted Computer Science major become a Senior Sales Manager? My life changed May 17, 1992. It was the day after my last college exam. That's when I got the call, that my mother was dead. She walked into the hospital about a month earlier for tests, discovered she had lung cancer, was set for treatment, when pneumonia set in and took her life. Having no brothers and sisters, and blaming my father for all that had happened (they were divorced two weeks before her death -- her wish, not his), my aunt and uncle convinced me to move to Richmond, VA and escape from New York. I ended up working for a small computer software company that made software for pharmacies. Being a small company, it gave me chances to show my abilities, and it was discovered that despite my intoversion, I was good at explaining the system and started public speaking and going on site to visit customers. During this time I met my first wife, Carla. I wish I could explain why I married her, the best I can come up with is that I thought I could fix her. I couldn't, and due to her habits, nearly had to file for bankruptcy. We separated, she broke into my rental townhouse and I had to get a restraining order. No kids, thank goodness for that. The last time I talked to her was April, 1999. She tried reaching out a couple of times for closure, but when I decided to break away I had already reached closure and didn't want to open up old wounds. Maybe that's selfish of me, but felt it was best. In August, 1998 my company was bought out by QS/1, who was our "enemy". Because of bad feelings harbored by the staff, I...Expand for more
was the only programmer of 13 who didn't quit, and had to rebuild a staff because the product was being maintained. I became general manager of the office and learned how to run a small division of 50 people. It was great freedom and gave me the opportunity being single again to learn golf. QS/1's headquarters are in Spartanburg. On one of my trips to the corporate office I met Heather, who was going through a divorce like I was. We became friends, and a support group for each other. She lived in Columbia, about 100 miles from Spartanburg, so I found more and more reasons to visit the corporate office. Eventually friends became more than friends, and we were engaged on her birthday (and Easter) in 2001. Her whole family knew I was proposing, I did in front of all of them, on the knee and everything. She had a son from her previous marriage, who I have adopted. With her being in Columbia, me in Richmond, something had to give. An opportunity existed to take a position as a marketing analyst manager, and with my knowledge of the products applied and got the position. This honed by abilities to speak and present, eventually presenting to group of hundreds. This led me to a position as a sales manager, and finally a senior sales manager. So I moved to Greenville, we got married, and then we both moved to Spartanburg. I realize there are many mistakes I've made in my life, yet any of them would put me in a different place than I would be in today. So were they truly mistakes, or fate? I am now pursuing my masters at the University of South Carolina, and am an Assistant Scoutmaster for my son's boy scout troop. I travel frequently for business, but rarely back to the NYC metro area.
