Richard's Story

After Austin High, I joined the US Army, for 1 year in Army Language School, the remaining time in Germany, where I was in Military Intelligence, using my German from AHS and my Russian from ALS. I came home to Austin in 1956, and had several jobs: letter carrier, telephone central office equipment installer, construction electrician apprentice, milkman, etc. In 1959, I registered at UT, graduating in 1961 with a BA in Linguistics, and in 1962 with an MA. Then I had a job in Morocco, teaching and running the language lab for the US Air Force. In 1963, I was awarded a Fulbright Lecturing Grant in Pamplona Spain, which was renewed for a second year. In 1965, I was awarded another Fulbright grant in Baghdad, Iraq. I bought a Renault station wagon in Spain for $90 and drove it all the way from Pamplona to Baghdad, where I lived until the 6-day war in 1967. I left on the third day of the war for Iran, then drove back to Spain and flew back to the US. I got a job in New York, as (eventually) Senior Technical Translator for GE, which I worked at for about 12 years. In 1979, I started my own translation agency on 5th Avenue, Richard E. Smith Associates. In '87, I got ...Expand for more
tired of the hassles of New York City, and moved to Las Vegas, which is where I have been since, My company name here is Communications Consulting Service, still translating For a while, shortly after I got here and until the business grew big enough to support me and my family, I taught part-time at the UNLV and the local Community College - now the State College. Travel: I haven't been able to travel as much as I'd lik, but my wife and I did manage to go to Europe a few years ago, stopping at Zurich, Vienna, Budapest and Innsbruck. In 2013, a customer sent me on a business trip to Cyprus, where I spent a couple of weeks. My Spouses I married 3 times: a German girl, Irmgard, whom I brought back to Austin, but who wanted to return to Germany. A Japanese-German girl, Yoshiko, whom I met at UT, but who decided she liked someone else better. Finally(!) a girl from Massachusetts, Ann Marie, who apparently still considers me a keeper after nearly 50 years. We met in Spain, at the University. I have two sons, Geoffrey and BJ, both in Las Vegas, and two daughters, Margaret, born in Austin and living in New York City, and Angie, born in Spain, now living in Reno.
