Richard's Story
Life
After high school, I joined the Air Force as a medical administrative specialist. My dream, like a lot of my friends, was to start a career and travel the world. I was lucky enough to live that dream.
I was lucky enough to live in beautiful countries like Belgium and Germany, and in beautiful cities like Tampa Florida, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.
I loved my work and loved traveling, which made easy to stay in the Air Force for 20 years. My last assignment was working for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs at the Pentagon. It looks so much different looking out from the Pentagon than it does looking in. It was an experience I will never forget.
After retiring, I moved to the New York City area and worked as the Director of a Dermatopathology lab. I worked there for three years, then decided it was time for a career change. I have always enjoyed working in the financial arena, so I now work for a firm that does financial planning and wealth management in Manhattan. I am the Chief Operating Officer and very much love what I do.
I never married but have two dachshunds which are my kids. I live 20 minutes outside Manhattan in a peaceful neighborhood where me and my "kids" are enjoying life.
School
I started school in Michigan, then moved to California when I was 7. The first school I attended in California was Sunnydale Elementary in Lanca...Expand for more
ster.
The first elementary school I remember well is Eastside Union. I started 4th grade and remember my teacher very well...Mr. Dufour. My other teachers were Mrs. Clancy, Mr. Forbush, and Mr. & Mrs. Spencer.
I attended High School and Antelope Valley High School. It was a very awkward time for me then, which made my high school experience awkward. My home life was difficult which translated to me not focusing on enjoying what high school had to offer. My grades were always good but I didn't "experience" high school, like many of my friends did. I had many friends and have managed to keep in touch with a few today.
College
I attended the University of Maryland while in the Air Force. UMC had satellite campuses on most military bases, which made it easy to remain at one school. It was difficult working full-time and taking classes, but I think it made the result much more rewarding.
I graduated with a BS in Management Studies. I also received an Associate Degree in Health Care Administration.
I will be starting on my MBA this year at the University of Montclair in New Jersey.
Military
I am very grateful for the time I spent in the Air Force. I was able to see parts of the world I wouldn't have gotten to see otherwise. I had fantastic jobs, some great bosses, and was able to finish school. The only thing I love better than the military is being retired from it!
