Rick's Story

Life Hello people. To keep it short, I graduated at age 21, not an auspicious start however, I hold a Master's degree in Social Work and have had a mostly rewarding career in Child Welfare, retiring at age 45 on Manitoulin Island where we have lived for the past 20 years. I have two children - Rebecca aged 28 and Andrew aged 25 both of whom live in Toronto. I just celebrated my 33rd wedding anniversary on Aug 3rd with the only woman I have ever known who would put up with me all this time. I do wonder what it might have been like if I had pursued a certain relationship beyond high school but it doesn't really matter since I've been happy for so long now. I have been a Lion's member for over 25 years and am also a Mason and a Shriner. In fact I was in London at the Hilton this past weekend for the International Hillbillies Convention. We are all Shriners whose sole purpose is to raise monies so kids in medical need can attend the Shriner's Hospitals at absolutely no cost to them or their family in any way. My daughter was a lucky recipient of care in Montreal to have her leg lengthened. She was there three months. Believe it or not, Bernie Jackson and I became very good friends after high school. I was living in Haileybury, Ont. and visiting my parents on our anniversary at a camp on Rib Lake, for a bon fire after having gone to Temagami for dinner. Bernie was talking to my dad when Linda and I showed up. He had a cottage across the lake and had come over for the bon fire, He was good friends with the then vice principal of New Kiskeard High School, as was I and it took off from there. A couple of years later, Bernie's cottage fell on him when its foundation was washed out by the spring run-off. Bernie came close to dying and spent many months in the hospital. Jack ( the v.p. ) and I along with another friend of Bernie's went over and raised the cottage, fixed it up and repaired the damages don...Expand for more
e. I've lost contact with Bernie but if he is still around, I hope his health is good and maybe if someone knows him they could get him to drop me a line. My four sisters all live in London still and are all retired as well. I see them often during the year either when they come to Manitoulin or when we go to London. We usually stay at Joan's house - smoke free and kids gone and dogs no more. I miss my dogs but having put the last one down two Christmases ago, we've made the decision not to have another since we plan on travelling once Linda decides to retire. I think she is now saying 2010. We'll see what happens. Meantime, I'm driving school bus and have built myself a nice woodworking shop where I can let my creative energies flow. Keeps me off the streets and out of detention. The kids visit and bring their dogs so, I get to play once or twice a year with them. I hunt moose, deer and partridge because I love the bush and I really like the meat. Sorry if that offends anyone, but you probably like something I don't as well. I quit smoking in 2001 after 42 years despite my wife having learned to just leave me and I would get to it. My advice is to never stop trying to quit. Eventually you will. I had quit for 6 months, a year and two years before I finaly succeeded. Believe me, it ain't easy but man is it ever worth it. My wife is a public health nurse here and spearheaded the campaign to have our island home smoke free in all public buildings. She made a lot of friends. She got a lot of people upset at various times, but she believed in what she was doing and finally succeeded well before the legislation was passed. Made me very proud to be associated with her. Guess that's enough rambling. I don't even remember what I've written and I'm not going to go over it and make changes or corrections either. Hope to hear from some class-mates good or bad, whether we were friends or foes, it'll be nice.
