Rick's Story
I live in Augusta, GA. My children: Laura, 24; Sarah, 23; Grace, 21; Isaac, 18. Granddaughter, Mackenzie, is 4.
There's not much to say about my life. I am content. I am thankful for that gift.
Those of you who know my sibs and mother will be happy to know that they are well. Mom celebrated her 80th birthday July 2008. All the kids convened, and 10 of her 13 grandkids showed up, too. She is in wonderful health and spirits and has a great 30+ year marriage with Bob Manby. They are superb partners. I've lived long enough to gain some appreciation of what an amazing human my mother is. Kind and modest; steady, bright, and funny.
Tom (and Judy) live in Sandusky, and on Kelleys Island. They have two boys. Deb (and Dick) live in CA. They have two daughters. Patti (and Dave) live in Gahanna. They have one of each. Paula lives ...Expand for more
in Grove City. She has two girls and a boy.
Lately I have been thinking about the span of years from 1970 until 2008. I compare that with 1955-1970 - the span from FHHS's opening until our class's departure. (Franklin Heights was 12 years old when we entered as sophomores; we have been gone for 38 years.) When I visit Columbus, if I make my way to the West Side, what I sense is that some of the innocence and purity of our comparative economic and cultural poverty has been replaced by a cold hardness. We have seen cities grow outward, with established working class areas limping into blightedness, but when it is the old school district, it is so much more real. Our youth spent, hopes and dreams adjusted by hardships, time, and loss, we trudge toward the boneyard, vaguely glimpsing the goings-on through a veil of tears.
