Rick's Story

Although I did not graduate from CVHS, I have more roots with CVHS alumni than my other high school. I grew up in Castro Valley and went through the public school system up to and including my sophomore year. Many friends & memories were made at Stanton Elementry School, A.B. Morris Junior High and Castro Valley High. In 1966, our family moved to San Ramon, CA. I graduated in 1968 at San Ramon Valley High School, Danville, CA. Attended Cal State Hayward 1968 - 1973, earing Bachelor of Science, Chemistry...... First (1.5 years) at CSUH I was a Pre-Med\Biology Major..... In my sophomore year, I couldn't stand my Genetics Professor..... Dropped the course and Biology major and switched to Chemistry. I also completed Winemaking & Enology courses at U.C. Davis in 1973. February, 1971 married SRVHS alumni Jill Barboni. We made it for (3) years and agreed it was best to go our separate ways. August 1972 - June 1973: Worked as a Laboratory Technician at Villa Armando Winery, Pleasanton, CA June 1973 - March 1978: Analytical Chemist of Enology at Villa Armando Winery, Pleasanton, CA. During this period of time, I rented, living in Pleasanton...... Moved and met my future wife (Brenda) in Livermore. We moved to the Hayward hills (Oakhill Apartments) above the Hayward Golf Course. SRVHS alumni Karen Witherely parents were managing the Apartments and we ocassionally visited with Karen when she dropped in from Palo Alto to see her parents. June 1975, Brenda & I married in her home town, Butte, Montana. July 1977, we bought our first house in San Ramon near Cal High. April 1978: I went to work for Weibel Champagne Vineyards located in Mission San Jose and Redwood Valley,Mendocino County,CA. From 1978 - 1994: I advanced through various occupational ranks at Weibel ..... first as Analyitical Chemist..... then Associate Winemaker.... then Winemaker.... then Vice President, Winemaker. June 1980, Brenda & I sold the Broadmore Drive house and purchased our second home in the Twin Creeks development, San Ramon. Our first son (Nick) was born in 1986. Our second son (Kris) was born in 1990. August 1994: We sold our home in CA moved to Richland, WA buying a newly constructed semi-custom built home. I became Winemaker for Coventry Vale...Expand for more
Winery in the Yakima Valley, WA producing table wines from vineyards in Washington, Oregon & Idaho. August 1996 - Present: I was recruited and became The Head Sparkling Winemaker for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates producing sparkling wine for Domaine Ste. Michelle. During this period of time, both our boys successfully completed their (K through 12) education through the Washington State Public School System. Our oldest (Nick) attended Eastern Washington University and graduated June 14, 2009 with a degree in Business Management and now lives in Spokane, WA. Our youngest son (Kris), is completing his junior year at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA. He landed a part-time job at The Grocery Outlet in Spokane and won't be coming home this Y2010 summer. The move to Washington has been exciting and benefical for our family. We thoroughly enjoy the Mid-West-Like-Attitude we experience from the people living in the Tri Cities (Richland, Kennewick, Pasco). The Columbia River, Yakima River and Snake River flow through the Tri Cities. The boat launch is two miles from our house...... and launch fees are free! Summers are hot and humidity is low (12 percent - 22 percent), we only get nine inches of precipitation annualy as compared to "wet" Seattle. During the winter, Snow Skiing is ninety miles away. The Rocky Mountains are two hours away. Brenda's home state (Montana) is four hours away. Washington State's wines are delicious and the industry is growing. It's a great place to live ... and there is no state income tax! I think you should sell your house and move to WA.... I will pour you a glass of wine when you arrive! .....and remember ..... Celebrate in Style with Domaine Ste. Michelle! Our web site ... three w period domainestemichelle period com Ste.
