Rick's Story

------------Scroll to the bottom for my oldest post from May 2009----------- October 10, 2015 update: Hey fellow classmates--ya, it's 50 years since we graduated. So old but I'm still enjoying life while time is running out and I'm staying active. Hiking and line dancing. Reminds me of the ballroom dance lessons my parents sent me to for a couple of months when I was 13 at Arden Hills Swim and Tennis Club--Sherm Chavore (Mark Spitz's coach) was the instructor. Take care... ------------------------------------------------------------------- November 17, 2013 note: Hey there everyone--it was 50 years ago today that I won the Corvette--can't even get my brain around that fact. And it was a Sunday, like today. And can't avoid the JFK 50th later this week. After 50 years, the original unedited (and very clear, bright, and computer-enhanced) "Zapruder" film was just shown apparently for the first time on a TV special--although it's been available on youtube for a year. It's very gross--the second shot caused a big chunk of red to blow forward out of JFK's head. He died that instant. We were led to believe he was being treated at the hospital for the next hour or so. But there was nothing to treat. This clear version puts an end to any theory that he was shot from the front. Since seeing it, I notice that other showings of the film on TV crop out the bottom of those few frames so his head is not shown (as if the camera moved upward for a few seconds), or they just stop the film just before the gross frames, or the most common--they skip over them, just showing the first shot fired where JFK grabs his neck and then jump to where Jackie Kennedy is climbing over the trunk. That's the video I've seen for 50 years--until last week. What is also surprising is that Jackie's head was an inch or two away from his head when the second shot was fired--she had leaned towards him after the first shot. If you want to see it, go to youtube and search for Zapruder 2012 or Zapruder stabilized or Zapruder HD. Just amazing what experts and computers can do with old 8mm film--turning it into a sharp 1080 HD film. Hard to believe but Jackie Kennedy was only 32 when she became first lady. Their looks had a lot to do with Kennedy getting elected, probably transcending his politics---just like being black got Obama elected, despite being an inexperienced, anti-America socialist who, 5 days before election day in 2008, campaigned on the promise that he would "fundamentally transform America." The response of most voters: "Whatever--I'll vote for you cuz it will be cool to have a black president." In my book, calling for the fundamental transformation of America = anti-America. -------------------------------------------------------------- January 2013 update: I've added a few new photos (click the GALLERY tab above). If anyone wants higher rez copies of the photos I posted, let me know. Classmates "down-rezes" (is that a word?) photos even if they're uploaded in high resolution. email is rickscomeau at yahoo. Yes, it's now been 50 years since 1963. Holy cow! Thanks to everyone who signed my guestbook. Hope everyone is OK. --------------------------------------------------------- Update March 2011: The other night I was thinking--What a difference 50 years makes--no, not 1961 to 2011, but this: If we Class of 1965 people had been born 50 years earlier, the only personal vehicle we would ride in until we were teenagers would be a horse and buggy! And until we were 28, the only highway over the Sierras would be the unpaved 1864 wagon road! We wouldn't have electricity in our homes until we were at least 10 years old. Our only media would be print until we were in our late 20s when we might hear a radio. Until 1915, there was no such thing as a PA (public address) system with amplified speech, much less amplified music. We guys would have been the perfect age to be drafted into World War I, and each and every one of us Class of 1915 people would have died by now! And 50 years doesn't seem that long ago when I think about the songs that were new 50 years ago this month: Runaway by Del Shannon, Walk Right Back by Everly Brothers, Bonanza by Al Ciola, Blue Moon by the Marcels, and I've Told Every Little Star by Linda Evans. BTW, if you join Classmates, make sure you cancel before your plan expires, otherwise, they'll charge your credit card for a year at full price and you can't get a refund. ------------------------------------------------------------ Update September 30, 2009: This latest news about Roman Polanski reminds me of a certain time in LA. In 1975, I met a cute girl, Daisy Magnin, at the Tower Records on Sunset. She lived up in Benedict Canyon at Yvette Mimieux's house and Roman Polanski was staying there also. I never saw them (I chatted with Yvette on the phone once and asked for Daisy a couple times (this was before cell phones of course, and before answering machines) but one time at the house, there was a paper grocery bag on the kitchen table with "Roman's Vitamins" handwritten on it. I looked in and it had 10-15 bottles of vitamins. Also, I was kind of surprised that the ranch-style house with trees all around looked so similar to the Manson murder house I saw on TV, and it was only about a mile from that house, also in Benedict Canyon. Daisy left for Rome suddenly and gave me her number there but...oh well. -------------------------- June 12, 2009: Brian Sutton reminded me that it was 44 years ago today we were dragging ourselves home from our all-night grad party at Alpine Bowling Alley (on Florin Road). I forgot who the entertainment was, other than the Coasters. Brian said we had Dick & DeeDee, Kathy Young, and the Missing Links, who I never heard of. I vaguely remember seeing Dick & DeeDee singing on the bowling lanes, but don't remember anything about the others. The Coasters were cool since we were dancing right next to them (Brian says it was in the bar). You can see the Coasters on YouTube from 1965 and get an idea of what we saw. We thought they were an oldies act even though it had only been 2 years since their last hit. Music changed really fast back then. I remember the bus ride to the bowling alley and how some booze had made it onto the bus and we were passing bottles around and drinking up fast--the ride is only 20 minutes or so which means drinking fast. I remember someone else had more booze later in the place--someone I didn't know passed out bad and had to be taken to the hospital. The next morning, I remember walking home from Mira Loma in somewhat of a daze. Ya, that was 44 years ago today. Just can't believe it's been that long ago. 1965 was a good summer. Two weeks before graduation, I had gone to the Stones at Memorial Auditorium, which was the night after the Zombies, Ike & Tina Turner, DeeDee Sharp, Shangri-Las, Tommy Roe, Jimmy Soul. Three weeks after graduating, on August 1, I got my own car finally, a 57 Chevy, and an apartment at 3545 Edison Ave #24. Had some fun times there. Went to the Beach Boys again at Memorial on August 20. I had forgotten about this show until I came across my ticket stub. For the last week of August, ...Expand for more
a friend and I drove to LA for fun--in a VW bug which we slept in more than once! I look at how small they are now and can't believe I slept in there. We went to Sunset Blvd and the It's Boss club and saw the Bobby Fuller Four a year before their big hit and a year before he died. On the way back to Sacramento, saw the Beatles at the Cow Palace on August 31st. On October 29, saw Paul Revere and the Raiders at Memorial, and on December 3, saw the Stones at Memorial, but only for a few minutes cuz I got kicked OUT by Sac cops...they literally grabbed me...for walking up to the front to take a photo! But that turned out to be a big deal since a bit later as I was hanging around outside being pissed, I met a girl who had heard that Keith Richards had been electrocuted. So we went around to the back where there was an ambulance waiting, and out Keith comes being held up by a cop and a manager type. I had 2 seconds to stick out my arm with my Instamatic camera within 2 feet of him and clicked the button and the flash worked! I took a color photo that is super clear and valuable. And the girl became my girlfriend for 10 months. She gave me advice that helped me avoid the draft and Viet Nam. After we split up she hooked up with my friend and they have a kid. All cuz I walked up to the front of the floor with a camera. -------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone, (May 2, 2009:) After high school, worked at McClellan AFB for two years, went to American River College, then to UC Berkeley--graduated in early 1974. Now I'm embarrassed to admit I went to Berkeley since the administration, teachers, students, residents, and local politicians have gone insanely leftist. Then to Santa Monica/West LA for 7 years. Then to Orange County til 1997 when I moved back to Northern California. The Sacramento metro area has about 2.5 million people--quite a change from 1965. That's nearly the exact population of the entire state of Nevada, and more than 12 states. Back in high school: Remember drivers training with the big Chevys with manual transmission on the steering column? Just 3 forward gears. And the color movies showing dead people in car wrecks? Do they still do that? Remember the snack bar next to the cafeteria with the great brownies? I also liked the rice and gravy in the cafeteria. Remember how people burned their leaves in the street? Seems crazy now but it was a good fall thing--smelling the burning leaves. Is it just me or wasn't there was a much higher percentage of "normal" people back in the 60s than today. Sometimes, like when I look at the yearbooks, 1965 seems like it was just 20 years ago--not 44 years ago! Can that be right? But other times, I think 1965 was so long ago. 1992 was a long time ago. 1975 was eons ago. And we're talking 10 years before that! I don't feel much older other than I need reading glasses, but the reality is we're gettin OLD. Here's a reality check: The "old guy" on The Office is one of the Grass Roots--Creed Bratton. Born in Sacramento and went to Sacramento State. I liked their Feelings album in 1968. Back in high school, when we'd hear that someone died at 61, we'd think--Oh, well, he was old. Now it's like whoa--I need another 30 years at least. I have things to do. If you like Craigslist and the Doors, you'll like this Wierd Al video--doing a perfectly pretentious Jim Morrison. You can find it on youtube. Morrison was an idiot, jumping off buildings and death-wish crazy drinking. But I do have a connection with him...I met his girlfriend Pam Courson in February 1971 and was with her the night before she flew to Paris. Jim joined her a few weeks later and then he died in July. She was trying to fix his self-destructive behavior by getting him into a new environment but it was too late. And worse, she got dragged down by his mess and died just 3 years later. That long black coat she is wearing in the photos called "Last known photos of Jim Morrison" is the coat she wore into our house that night (she was good friends with one of my girl roommates in Sacramento). She was born in Weed. She told me "Shasta...well, the town is called Weed" like she preferred the name Shasta...I told her my mom grew up in nearby Yreka, and she thought that was cool. She told me about her women's clothing store on La Cienega. We drank beer and talked for maybe a couple of hours, and not about Jim. She was very cute, smart, funny, sweet, and fun. To me at the time, she was just a lively 23-year-old girl, kinda small with red hair, and wasn't famous at all. I figured she was just one of many girlfriends that Morrison had and would be done with him soon. I didn't know she was actually his main long-term girlfriend. And I didn't know she had died for years. Her death wasn't in most newspapers, and I missed the one-day short article in the few newspapers that did report it...I never read the newspaper regularly. Turns out she was mentioned in a book or two beginning in the 80s but how would I know? I never saw The Doors movie. Still haven't. Really don't want to. If I had, I would have known what I know now much sooner. I never saw any mention of her or photos of her until the mid-90s. And when I did, I was completely shocked. Until the internet, information was not easy to find. She was 3 months older than me. Still makes me sad after all these years. In my spare time since 2000 or so, I put together all my favorite songs on mp3 in chronological order by month from 1955 to 2009. I put the date code at the beginning of the filename so they play back in order automatically. It's a great way to listen to music. I have all 4300 songs on one 16gb USB drive so I can play it in the car. Nearly every hit and all my favorite album songs. If anyone wants a copy, let me know. But back to Berkeley--I was there during the Patty Hearst thing--in fact, I drove in front of her house a few hours before her kidnapping on my way to classes, as I always did since Benvenue Avenue is parallel to busy College Avenue and was quicker for me--I lived a few blocks south of her place. That night when I heard the news that Patty Hearst had been kidnapped, I thought about how I had driven by her house both before and after the kidnapping--and hadn't noticed anything. During those next few months, I had to listen to pro-SLA morons around Berkeley. When the LAPD blew up most of the SLA assholes in Compton, I cheered. The next day, someone spray-painted on the side of the Berkeley Toyota dealership: "Mizmoon & Camilla We Love You" (I have a photo I took). Wonder what that idiot is doing today. A month later, I jumped on an offer to work in LA. I had had enough of Bay Area men-hating unhappy women dressed in the most un-sexy baggy clothes. It was a good move...just in time for disco, beaches, and fun. One more thing...I didn't know until around 2000 that the first Unabomber victim was one of our 1965 classmates, Hugh Scrutton. In December 1985, lunatic leftist Ted Kaczynski left a bomb behind Hugh's computer store at 1537 Howe Avenue. Hugh picked it up and it exploded. He lived for 30 minutes according to articles.
