Rick Huebner:

CLASS OF 1988
Glynn AcademyClass of 1988
Brunswick, GA

Rick's Story

Let's see. After 1988, I went to UGA. While attempting to go to class, I also became a paramedic at age 20. I could give morphine but couldn't (legally) buy beer! Go figure. Worked for St. Mary's Hospital EMS while in school and figured I'd take some time off. Worked for Glynn County Fire as a firefighter/paramedic. I moved to Statesboro where I finished up school BS Biology/Chemistry while working in the local emergency room and on the ambulance as a paramedic. Man, wild calls working EMS in a rural college town. One day it's college kid puking guts out after doing 151 shots after giving blood and the next, it's 8 migrant workers ejected from a car into a corn field. During this time I also managed to do some 911 sales and computer database application work for small rural public safety departments(this will eventually pull me out of EMS). I moved to the ATL in 1996 or 1997 working as a paramedic supervisor first in Cobb County then in Fulton. I didn't know the difference between Alpharetta and Roswell at the time but learned quickly. EMS in the Atlanta area sucks for paramedics. Most of the time you are 5-10 minutes from a major hospital. The only skill you need to know is how to complete paperwork quickly. What fun. In Statesboro, we often had response times to major calls of 30-40 minutes and provided Advanced Life Support backup to the surrounding counties with only a small rural hospital in the county. Skills had to be sharp. I finally left the EMS world in 1999 after taking a job as a network administrator for a small dot com in 1998. I moved into development and consulting with that company. That lead me to my current job at Vitria Technology where I've been a Sales Engineer ...Expand for more
since 2000. Between the two last jobs, I've traveled to Korea, The Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan, Peru, Brazil(too many times to count...just ask my wife), Canada, and Mexico. I never thought when I was working as a paramedic that I'd have to add pages to my passport. People say "wow, that must be fun doing all that traveling." That's crap. I literally went to China on 2 days notice(luckily I got my visa before that) and to Brazil one of the times on 1 day notice. I was gone to Brazil(Brasilla, not fun places like Sao Paulo or Rio) for a little more than 72hrs from ATL airport and didn't spend one night in a hotel! I know what a lot of airports look like, but hardly ever get to spend any time enjoying the destination. In 2004 I married the love of my life. We met in of all places, a church bible study! The first time Carrie came into the room, being the group leader, I decided to count out the small groups so that I would be luckily in the same group she was in! It's good to be the leader. :) We dated for a couple of years, but both knew it was meant to be. We married in her home church in Melbourne Beach, Fl. and spent our honeymoon in St. Lucia. We have a beautiful little girl after trying for nearly 3 years. I think that if one more person came up to Carrie and said something like "It will happen when you least expect it" or "You just need to relax" we would collectively grab them by their [insert appropriate genitalia] and strangle them with it. My wife found a great website that I'll post about this aspect of trying to conceive and all the unsolicited friendly help we received on the topic. Well, that's my life since GA in a nutshell. Looking forward to seeing the class of '88.
