Rick's Story

april 19, 2010 what an amazing world we live in. less than a week ago i was sitting in the cn tower celebrating after a successful road show for our ontario team, gazing out (and down... quite a ways down in fact!) at the beauty of toronto island. today i am watching the tide ebb and flow, the water sucking and gurgling through the rocks and shells of the beach outside my front door. and it is right outside the door, maybe 20 feet above the high tide mark. a small flock of diving ducks circles and disappears along the waves, larger gulls and canada geese drift further off in the water, waiting, it seems, for the tide to drift out again late this afternoon. i am sitting in a cabin looking out at my wife of almost 25 years (well, 25 years tomorrow) who is capturing the color of the sky as it looked last night, using her watercolors on a smaller 8X12 canvas. last night we sat on the front porch of the cabin we are renting for the week and stared out at the broughton archipelago, mainly hoping to spot a whale. it is a little early in the season but we spoke with two of the locals in telegraph cove yesterday and they had heard on the marine radio earlier in the day that a humpback had been seen. first time this far up island and it is truly astounding in its beauty. we are at the cluxewe resort, located in between port macneill and port hardy. look it up at cluxewe.com if you're interested. looking directly across to malcolm island, complete with postcard white buildings, red roofs and the lighthouse. not enough fog to have the foghorn sound and in fact the weather has been delightful. spring is a couple weeks behind us here and while my cherry trees are in full blossom at home, the bloom is not quite as mature here yet. great time to be here...before the crowds! beyond malcolm island, the north and east of us is filled with countless islands. these eventually give way to the waters of the queen charlotte strait. then more mountainous islands fading into bluish gray at a snow peaked horizon where the coastal mountains reach out to snag passing clouds till they release the riches that skiers like me love so much. i could see us living here in the not too distant future. it would seem to add a lot of traveling time to me but in fact it is only 3 hours from where we live right now, but with a much better view! hope your year is going great. =================================== Happy April Fools Day to everyone I used to know! This is my update from sunny Vancouver Island where I am looking at the cherry blossoms exploding in a snowstorm of white and by the end of the day I will be standing on the deepest snowpack on the planet. It actually dwindled to a mere 624 cm and you can check it out at mountwashington.ca to find one of a very few mountains where you can look out at the ocean before you ski down a run. I feel very blessed to be living in a place where you can go skiing or boarding in the morning and then garden, bike, golf, windsurf or even surf the same afternoon (of course you would have to drive like hell to get over to Tofino to catch a wave before the sun sets!). I see that I have a massive amount of hit...Expand for more
s on my page (I'm in to double digits!) and I would like to invite anyone who likes art to check out my wife's web site, just up at faerieartiste.com Mary Anne and I will be celebrating 25 years together this month and talking about where we are both going together for the rest of our love and life. We have an oceanfront cabin booked on the north part of the island near Port McNeill. I can hardly wait. Till my next random thought, all the best to everyone from way back. Best wishes to Tony McQuilter and his family who I caught up with by email recently. I owe you a phone call Tony! Rick -------------------------------------------- Greetings to all those F.W.C.I. students who were there while I was... there, sometimes! I thought that my time in high school would have an effect on my life later on. It's funny how the impacts are nothing like what I expected. The little things turn out to be important and yet the huge aspects of high school life have simply drifted in the currents of my past. Life is good. I say that to myself every day when I wake up, barely sit up in bed, and look out at the Pacific Ocean. I live in Nanaimo, a block from the water and look out across the Georgia Strait towards the Sechelt Peninsula and Vancouver. My role with Iris The Visual Group is ever changing. I mainly train our optometrists, opticians and front line staff in a variety of business areas. The position allows me the opportunity to travel across Canada and around the world. Our company is the largest vision care company in Canada but if you live in Ontario you will have to wait as we are just expanding into my home province. I have had the chance to travel to Peru twice on vision care missions and while I was there got a chance to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu. It was an amazing experience. We helped about 7000 patients over a 5 day period of the mission providing them with everything from eye examinations, eyeglasses and sun protection for their eyes to cataract operations, dentistry, general medicine and plastic surgery. The people are so poor there that when you return to Canada you are in a daze for weeks from all the amenities that we take so much for granted. On the personal front. I am married with 3 children. 2 girls and a boy. The two girls are in university and my son is in high school. Probably doing the same dumb stuff I was in grade 10! My kids think it is hilarious that we got married on 4-20, which I learned is national pot smoking day. I swear that this day didn't exist when we pick our wedding years ago! Free time is spent hiking, camping and fishing in the summer and getting up to the mountain as much as possible for skiing in the winter. Yes, we do have a mountain on Vancouver Island, Mount Washington. It is amazing. Huge dumps of snow during the season and the lineups are never too brutal. Anyway, just a little taste of my life to those of you who actually care about what has happened to me. If you want to know more look me up on facebook. This site sucks with the pay option and I don't even know if you can actually read this blurb without upgrading to "gold". Love to talk to you if you wish Later. Rick
