Rick's Story
Life
After Dieruff, I worked at the Lehigh Valley Dairy as a maintenance electrician (1 yr.), and went to a 2 year technical school for electronics. After finishing technical school (5/69), I enlisted in the Army for 3 years. I had basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC and went to US Army Signal School at Ft. Monmouth, NJ. for microwave repair (26L20). I got married to a girl from Allentown while I was stationed in NJ. (12/70). Upon graduating from Signal School, 100% of previous classes were assigned to Viet Nam; incredibly, from my class 1 guy received orders for Korea and 2 guys received orders for Alaska: My orders were for Ft. Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. My wife and I lived off-base in Alaska for 1 year and had a baby boy in December 1971. I got an early-out of the Army at (the signing of) the end of the Viet Nam war (3/72). We took 30 days to drive home from AK to PA, where I spent my last year in the Army National Guard in Bethlehem, PA. After the Army, I worked ...Expand for more
as an industrial electrician and mechanic at a couple of different places/factories in and around Allentown. We lived in New Tripoli for about 2 years, and then moved to Kutztown and lived there for about 7 years, until 1981. We had a baby girl in November 1975. In 1978 I went back to school. I spent 3 years at the Allentown campus of Penn State. I transferred to the main campus in State College, PA and we moved to Pine Grove Mills, PA in August 1981. We lived there 2½ years. I graduated in 1983 (BSME), and took a job with Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Ohio in March 1984. I design steam boilers and components (heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid flow engineering) for utilities (elect. generation) and industry (process steam). Our son is married and lives about 10 minutes away. We have 2 grandchildren (1B/1G) from him and his wife. Our daughter is engaged and lives in Michigan. WeÂve been in Ohio 23 years now, and live just outside of Akron, OH. I retired June 1, 2006.
