Rick's Story

Life My Spouse First, let me say that no one ever fills out this "bio" stuff, but I decided to do it one evening when all the good shows were reruns. So ... Spouse: Florence. I was introduced to her by her cousin, who I was dating. Then, I introduced her cousin to the man she eventually married. Things do work out! My Pets Mali (pronounced Molly), 8 years old, is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, a rare breed of hunting dog (though we don't hunt). We've had her since she was a pup. Sox is like Mali but was rescued at age 7 just 24 hours before she was to be put to death. Huckleberry, 5, is a Border Terrier, like the hilarious killer dog in "Something About Mary." Only difference is that the movie dog was acting. Huck IS a killer, so we don't let him near people who don't like to be bitten. He's gentle at home except when a stranger visits. Needless to say, most visitors call us before arriving so we can crate Huck. My Kids David is a 5th grade teacher and loves it and has made me a grandparent twice. Emily is a stained-glass artist (churches, restaurants, etc.) and added a third grandchild to the family. School All was going well at Roslyn (, Long Island, N.Y.) High School until I flunked algebra. That landed me at a hoity-toit...Expand for more
y prep school in New Jersey (The Peddie School), which actually turned out to be a wonderful experience except for the fact it was male only (it has since gone coed). Then, off to University of Pennsylvania for a degree in English and Journalism and, finally, one year in Temple University's Graduate School of Communications. My Master's quest ended when son David was born, forcing me to join the world of working stiffs. College Oops. I put it all in the "schools" column. After all, college is "school," no? Workplace One year as an associate editor at a magazine catering to professional jewelers; eight years as a copy editor and Sunday Editor at a small New Jersey daily newspaper (The Burlington County Times), another eight as a writer and copy editor at a larger New Jersey daily newspaper (The Courier-Post) and, lastly, 18 years as a writer, editor and columnist at a huge newspaper (the double-Puliter-winning Philadelphia [Pa] Daily News) -- the best job one could imagine. Retired in 1997 following a heart transplant which, at least as of this writing, is still ticking. Yes, I'm really lucky and feel r e a l l y g-g-g argggggggghhhhh! Military Yeah, like some military organization would actually consider taking me.
