Rick's Story

Life I’m pasting in my professional bio, out of pure laziness. It is only necessary to add that Irene (see below) and I have been married for two years, and we live in Oakland, CA. One of the most active string players in the Bay Area, Rick Shinozaki happily resides in both orchestral and chamber music worlds. In addition to serving as Principal Second Violinist of SSV, Rick is violinist with the acclaimed Del Sol String Quartet and the Shinozaki-Jacobson Duo, and is Concertmaster of the Nova Vista Symphony. During his first two years as the newest member of the Del Sol String Quartet, Rick has participated twice in Del Sol's residency at the Hot Springs Music Festival, in the opening night of the world renowned Other Minds Festival, and in the release of the world premiere recording of the "Complete Quartets of George Antheil", in addition to numerous performances, collaborations, commissions and educational activities. In October 2005, the quartet will be on tour in Korea in collaboration with Delos, an organization of female composers based in Seoul. As concertmaster of the Hot Springs Festival Orchestra, Rick has participated in recordings of James Price Johnson's "Yamekraw" and Louis Moreau Gottschalk's Second Symphony for th...Expand for more
e Naxos label, and performed as soloist in Bottesini's "Grand Duo Concertante". Rick has also served regularly as concertmaster, and recently as soloist with the Vallejo Symphony. Other acclaimed solo performances include Durwynne Hsieh's Concerto for Marimba, Violin and Orchestra (premiered with the West Marin Festival Orchestra, and later performed with the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra and Marin Symphony) and the world premiere of Viennese composer Zdzislaw Wysocki's Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra with Kent Nagano, the Berkeley Symphony and violinist sister, Karen Shinozaki. With pianist Irene Jacobson, the Shinozaki-Jacobson Duo has delighted audiences throughout the Bay Area with an eclectic repertoire and interpretations critical reviews cite as "scintillating" and "in perfect harmony". The duo has recorded Alberto Ginastera's "Pampeana No. 1" for a Latin American Chamber Music Society CD, and has premiered sonatas by Fish and Hsieh. A protege of Serban Rusu of Tiburon, Rick was concertmaster of the Marin Youth and San Francisco Youth Symphony Orchestras. He received a Master of Music from Indiana University, studying extensively with legendary pedagogue Josef Gingold and internationally recognized soloist Yuval Yaron.
