Rick's Story

Wrote my short story before, but I guess it disappeared when Memory and Classmates merged. So here it is. After graduating from TPHS I went to Ventura College from Sept. 67 to Dec. 68, taking architecture. Also at that time I worked at Bayless Market in Santa Paula, my hometown, where I bagged groceries and stocked shelves. Was reunited many of my childhood friends. In Dec. of 68, one of those friends who happened to work at Selective Service let my best friend Jerry and I know that our names came up, so I made the choice to Join the USAF. I went in on Jan. 29, 1969. Went through Basic Training at Lackland AFB in TX and temporary duty at Brooks AFB also in TX. I then went on to tech. school for Fuels Specialist training. My first assignment was Yakota AFB Japan for 2 years then on to Plattsburgh AFB in up state NY. while up there did TDY to Goose Bay AFB/ NATO, Labrador. Up in the arctic tundra. Was planning to make a career out of it, but Vietnam ended just before we got out and all the military's let everyone go early. we had to stay our full terms and they told everyone that nobody would ...Expand for more
be retained. Got out and all the good jobs were taken, so I wasted 6 years hauling propane around So. Cal. In early 1975 I met my soul-mate Mary and in Nov. 1975 we were married and this Nov. we will celebrate 37 years together. Back to 1975, I worked there till 1978 and then had to move on. Worked the oil fields off and on, but full-time jobs were still scarce. Also worked Weyerhaeuser making and printing boxes for industry. Then Mary had moved from banking to our local school district. Finally a stable job. She told me of a position there in custodial, so I applied and we both worked there 28 years, working up to skilled positions. We retired in 2006 on the same day and put our home up for sale. It would take us 4 years to get it sold due to the economy crashing. But we finally did it and we bought a home in Coeur d'Alene, ID to be with kids and grand-kids. So here we are and here we will stay. There have been good times and bad, just as I suspect we are not alone. Hope all my old friends and classmates have fared well and keep doing so. To all we have lost. We miss and think of you often.
