Rick's Story
Updated July 28, 2009
I haven't been using this site much and use Facebook more, if you want to contact me there.
A brief update: After graduation from Montclair H.S. in 1982, I studied Architecture at Rhode Island School of Design for 1 year and then for five years at Cooper Union in New York City. After renovation a three story building in Brooklyn I moved to Southampton, NY on Long Island and worked at both construction and architecture.
--In 2001 I moved to Ukraine and began working as a missionary with the Calvary Chapel Church. I had been to Africa, Japan and Mexico but I felt Ukraine was the place. I mostly teach at the moment. I teach at our Christian church fellowship in Simferopol, Ukraine and also teach some English. I have been inspired with a number of songs and have produced three albums, which you can hear at my blog on Xanga called Templestream. Or you can hear some samples at a site called Worshipcorner.
The original plans for my life were not to become a missionary but God has used all of my education for good. Jesus described a type of building and foundation which surpases a physical building and foundation[Matthew 7]. If you're not bored by my life, here's some more history: In January 2005 I married Olya Yakovlieva in Kiev, Ukraine (A late start at 40 years of age!) and we live and work as missionaries in Simferopol, Ukraine. --Last spring we travelled to Israel and it was a wonderful trip to see the many historical sites and contemporary culture there.--Our son Jacob Josiah was born August 3rd, 2007 in Ukraine.--If you would like to receive monthly updates of the work we are doing I would be happy to send you our monthly newsletter. Don't worry, I never ask for money! I just like to write about interesting things related to life and God. --I would really like to hear from you and what you are doing, how you feel about life etc. -- Much I ...Expand for more
my life I spent living for myself and my somewhat self centerd goals. I had three basic dreams in life: To be an architect, to have a home near the beach and to have a wife and family. God opened the door for me to go to Cooper Union, perhaps the best architecture school in the USA (and completely scholarship free I would add. My grades were so so but I was inspired with very interesting essays which helped me to get in. The house I bought in Southampton, Long Island was pretty amazing. It was a great deal when I bought it. It was a four bedroom house where I installed a pool, all not to far from the Atlantic. The architecture job I had was idyllic, minutes from home in a cabin on a lake. God gave me my first two dreams but He also gave me the realization that these were pretty empty goals. This was not God's plan for my life. --It wasn't until I was ready to seek His plan for my life that I discovered more of a sense of fulfilment in my soul. It was then that I was able to meet my wife and begin a family. Life for a Christian is certainly not without trials, actually maybe there are more! But the difference for the believer is that God promises to be with you in the trials and that makes all the difference.
The main discovery of life, I believe, is that it is more than "food and drink," more than gratifying physical desires. The spiritual element makes all the difference in the world. Jesus said those who believe in Him will never hunger or thirst in the spiritual sense[John 6.35] and this to me is where real life begins. The food of His word, the scriptures and the water of His Spirit are really over the top, above and beyond our needs. It is out of this overflow of His grace that I offer you His proposition as found in the Gospel. John 3.16 is the shortest presentation of the Gospel.Check it out. You can ask me more about this if interested. May God Bless You!
