Rick's Story
After leaving Mahomet-Seymour High school in 1963, not by choice. I started my Senior year at Champaign High School and joined the Navy. I graduated from Champaign High School C.O.64 while I was in the Navy. After spending 4.5 years in the Navy I returned to Il. I worked at Kraft, Zale's Jewelery store, Humko, Springer Ford, McMorHan trucking and finally Champaign County Court Services as a Juvenile Detention Officer,Counselor until I was hired by the U.S. Government in Jacksonville, Florida.
After exiting the Navy I obtained an Associate Degree from Parkland and then a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Illinois University. After going to work for the Government I continued my education in the fields of Computer Systems Analysis and Program Management. I retired in 2005 as a Management Analyst;"Budget Financial Manager".
Before moving to Florida and going to work for the Government I had become involved in politics, ie, serving as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner in Paxton, Il.. After moving to Clay County Florida, I became involved in a number of political activities and became an organizer and activist for transportation and recreational trails in Florida, serving on numerous local, county and state level committees. I served on these committees either by appointment from the County Commissioners, the "Speaker" of the Florida House, or the Governor of Florida. I ran or managed a number of political campaigns at the local, county and state level, including my Daughter's campaigns for City Council, successful twice, and my own for County Commissioner, I lost to a girl, LOL.
I am now serving, in retirement, as a county "Planning Commissioner", Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Clay County Council on Aging, Board of Directors for the Clay County Fair, Precinct Captain of the Clay County Republican Executive Committee and a Guardian Ad Litem for the 4th Judicial Circuit Court.
I am tasked on a recurring basis to chair Ad Hoc committees on such effor...Expand for more
ts as the Clay County "Quality of Life Survey" and Greenways and Trails development for all of Florida and especially NE Florida.
I have two grown children; David is 44 and has three children and one grandchild (my first great grandchild), Michelle is 36 and has 4 children. Both of my children have adopted children: the real solution to abortion. My wife Sue (from Champaign High School) and I have been married for 45 years, I don't know how or why she decided to stay that long, LOL.
I now ride my Harley where ever and when ever I can. I like to ride up to the mountains in North Carolina and am planning a trip next year of riding my Harley to Alaska. I brought my Brother David's ashes home for his funeral services in my saddlebag a couple of years ago. I left my house in Keystone Hts., Fl. at 5:30 a.m. and arrived at my sister Carla's house (north of Mahomet) at 9:30 that same night; 1004 miles in 16 hours. David had never ridden a motorcycle at that rate of speed in his entire life, it was a glorious send off to my "Baby Brother" and my best friend.
Finally, as you can tell from my Q&A, I am very diverse in my political views. Although I have always been a registered Republican and am a Precinct Committee Captain for the Republican Executive board. I hate the label of "Conservative". My political beliefs are based on the father of my party, Abraham Lincoln's, "Republican Principles". They are all about accountability and responsibility, not religion or social progams.
Most of you who knew me "up there" wouldn't recognize me "down here". I have worked very hard to become a functional, responsible and go-to person in my commnunity, at all levels, local, county, regional, and state. I have managed to become, I believe, someone who, people of all walks of life know they can rely on. I still work very hard to maintain my individuality. That is the one thing I have managed to maintain throughout my life, my individuality. I have never fit any mold and I never want to.
