Rick's Story

Life Greetings to my long lost classmates at Franklin High School. While I graduated from Newton, having spent the first 10 school years at Franklin sort of left me in a no-man's land, reunion-wise. I have heard from a few of you over the years, and am grateful for that. With regard to "this is your life," I received a journalism degree from Northeastern, worked as a reporter and utimtely assistant city editor with the Patriot Ledger (Quincy). After that, I was managing editor and associate publisher of three high tech magazines. That led to becoming director of public affairs for BASF (and yes, I worked on the "We don't make the products you buy, we make the products you buy better campaign). The division I worked for some 10 years was folded, thanks to cheap labor in the Far East and Indonesia, so I started my own PR and advertising consultancy, which I still have. You'd recognize some of the brands I work for. Lately, I have been working with a partner founded an international quarterly magazine on interior design called FABULOUS FLOORS (check it out at Barnes & Noble). On the gossipy side, I am twice married, twice divorced and living with a stuning woman on a 200-year-old, 112-acre farm in upstate New York. Two kids. Daughter, Becky (named for Becky Thatcher in the Tom Sawyer novel) -- Phi Beta Kappa from UMass. Masters UColorado. Married to ex-naval intelligence compute...Expand for more
r jock now in veterinary school at Brown. Son, Alex is a musician and fronts the band Entrain which is reasonably well known in Masasachusetts. He's appeared with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, Charlie Daniels, Cheryl Crowe, Buddy Guy...etc. Standing next to me, you'd never recognize me today -- that's a challenge for my pals in law enforcement and government agencies. I know you are out there. You remember a skinny kid with a flat-top. I'm about 50 pounds heavier with long-ish strawberry blond hair and a red-blond and white beard -- kind of a Viking look if they were reasonably well groomed. For those who remember my fondness for fast, hot cars, I still have a pro dragster license (those are the big ones) and own a raspberry pink Elvis style '56 Cadillac custom convertible. If you ever see the magazine "Cruisin' New England, I'm the 'Lone Wolf' columnist. Sorry to be so long winded. I never posted any info here. Up until the annoucement by this classmates site that 12 of you had visited, few had expressed any interest. So, for those who did, thank you for that. Those were the days, my friends. So, as I look at a photostat of the original script of Casablanca here in my writer's den of an office, I guess as I would say, as the song goes "...the fundamental things apply, as time goes by." May you all live forever if you so choose. Rick Howland
