Rick's Story
Life
Hi. I finally woke up at about age 34, whilst in the throes of doctoral work in choral conducting at Indiana University. Up until that time, I was psychospiritually asleep, and it is remarkable that I ever accomplished anything.
Now I spend my time balancing a very high maintenance 14 year old stepson, ADD with all the emotional baggage that goes with it, with occasional conducting activities and a constant schedule of professional guitar work, both gigs and teaching. My wife and I made our first CD recently, a "holiday sampler." Last year I spent teaching choir, chamber singers and choral conducting at York College of Pa. I became a Roman Catholic while living in Dallas in the 1990s, got married and lived briefly in Denver, or was it heaven? and then moved to the DC metro area...I am a Texan in exile.
College
I was asleep the whole time.
I did study conducting with Helmuth Rilling in Frankfurt and Stuttgart, Germany for three years. How I accomplished anything during that time is a miracle, but I know I learned stuff that I still use in my conducting now: especially rehearsal technique/psychology, choral technique (blend, diction), interpretation and scholarship, and specialization in German oratorio.
My other conducting teacher Anshel Brusilow is one of the most gifted individuals I have ever encountered and was hugely important to my development as a conductor. From him ...Expand for more
I got a general knowledge of the Great American Symphonic tradition and a lot of help with my conducting technique. I consider my time at Indiana University, for conducting studies, to be almost a total loss. I learned how not to conduct there. I did make a lot of important friends and learned a lot of stuff about music there, so the time was not a total waste.
My guitar teacher, the late Chester Rupe in Corpus Christi, had me from age 13 through 17. His influence is still with me everyday, especially in jazz. My other guitar teacher, Al Petteway, is a specialist for acoustic fingerstyle playing, and he has filled in the gaps (I never studied guitar in music school...conducting was my major) of my guitar education.
Workplace
I am a professional musician, balancing careers as a choral conductor and Roman Catholic pastoral musician, with professional guitar playing and teaching. my bio follows:
