Ricky's Story

Life Honestly, I left Midland and haven't really looked back. On the rare occasion I do make it to back home (former home), I remember why I left. I do have some fantastic memories of junior high and high school friends and girlfriends cruising the drag from the Sonic on Midkiff Rd., to the Mr.Gatties parking lot on Cuthbert St., and down Andrews Hwy, and back again. Wow. I did have some good times on the triangle. Other than the above, I miss the food more than anything. I'm fortunate in that I went into the military in'86 and spent 5 years traveling around the globe and seeing and tasting a variety of cultures and places. I've done the same thing with my career choice, but instead of traveling the globe, I travel the country; mostly from Texas to Washington state and Oregon, with the occasional North East trip. The one thing I desperately miss about Midland it simply the Mexican food and Bar-BQ. I loved Jeorges, La Badago, Casa Madrid, and Casa Blanca, Jumburrito, and of course, Sam's Bar-BQ. Does Tex-Mex and Bar-BQ get any better than that? Nope. Not in my travels, not so far anyway. Right now, I'm living in Rock Springs, WY; however, my actual home, or house is in Albany, TX. Albany is small historic town 30 miles north, northeast of Abilene and is my mother's hometown. I have fantastic memories from Albany as it is where as a child, teenager, and young adult, I spent all of my Thanks Giving's, Christmas', Easter's, and a week or so during each summer at Ma Maw's house. She's long since past away, but I can still feel her there and miss her very much. As for Rock Springs, WY, well, its home for now. T...Expand for more
here is a tremendous amount of work in the pipeline corrosion industry, but it really is just another boom town, not too far removed from Midland in the early 1980's when we were growing up, just smaller. The thing I do enjoy about Rock Springs is that I'm only 3.5 hours from Yellow Stone Nation Park. Now that is something to be excited about. It is truly is God's countrt and is just as beautiful as one can imagine. I always suspected I was missing out on something living in Midland, and I was, as were you! I just didn't know what it was as a child and young teenage kid. I remember going to visit my cousins in Kerrville for a week or so during the summers. I'll be damned; they had lakes, rivers, canyons, creeks, and mountains (hills) to play in. They had the opportunity to go fishing, hunting, ATVing, and 4X4ing all their lives. We didn't get that so much. I remember growing up in Midland, living way out in the country where the nearest neighbor being 3 miles away, off of Hwy 1788, and the only thing to do was ride my bicycle to Water Wonderland on Hwy 80 (7 miles south), Canyon Creek on the newly completed Loop 250, which Mom had to drive me, Odessa with the family on Sunday's after Church on Golf Course Rd., 3 channels on the TV to watch, and an original Atari 2400 to play on. Hell,no wonder I left Midland. Anyway, I hope all who visit my Classmates.com page and read my bio are having a wonderful life. There are many of you out there that I do think of daily and I miss. You know who you are. It is nice to read most you are doing well. It's been along time. Let's get back in touch. Ricky A. Allred Class of '87
