One of Riley's favorite quotes is:"I'M STAYING SANE BY REALIZING I'M CRAZY. (Me! :-)) IF MAN LEARNS ANYTHING FROM HISTORY, HE LEARNS THAT HE LEARNS NOTHING. (Arnold Toynbee) A MAN'S REACH MUST EXCEED HIS GRASP OR WHAT'S A HEAVEN FOR. (Robert Burns) I TOLD THEM I WAS SICK. (Words on a tombstone.) Lincoln wasn't great because he was born in a log cabin, he was great because he got out of it. (James T. Adams)". More about Riley:"Crazy, but I realize it. So I'm NOT insane. Born and reared in the backwoods of Caldwell Parish in Louisiana. Made some friends and a few enemies. Struck out for some gold in California. Found none. Went back to Louisiana. Found a gal whose vision was blurred up close. Stayed close to her so she couldn't get a good look at what she'd agreed to marry. Graduated again. Moved to Shreveport, LA. Took the vow of poverty and began a teaching career that spanned twenty+ years. Graduated again and again. Taught some great students during that time. Became a Daddy twice to two great sons. Bestowed with a few honors while teaching. Made some more friends and a few more enemies. Left Shreveport after ...Expand for more
the wife and I were recruited to Charlotte, NC. Continued teaching for another 20 years. Made some trips to the Carolina beaches and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Bought some Mountain property in 1989. Camped out on and made excursions nearby rafting, canoeing, and hiking. Watched the boys grow into fine young men. Paid out of the "ying=yang" for their college education. Watched these two young men set out to practice living without the Old Man or the Great Mom around to boss them. Made some more friends, a few more enemies.... Kept contact with Sons via long distance. Visited one in California and another in Hawaii. Had great visits which they were glad to see end:). The Better Half retired; sold the Charlotte home; had knee surgery. I retired. We moved to the Mountains; I had a heart attack (Thanks, Dad!:) resulting in five (5) by-pass surgery. Survived to prevent the Wife from collecting on several life insurance policies. Trying to finish writing the GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL in historical fiction but the enjoyment of life diverts my short attention span. Making a LOT MORE FRIENDS and enjoying the scarcity of enemies. (Do you suppose the latter have gone underground and are with the Taliban in the mountains of Pakistan?) Making procrastination a "true art form" but, every once-in-a-while coming up with some finishing touches on a book that might touch someone. My latest favorite quote is one that I THINK I CAME UP WITH: Age, if it ain’t physical, it IS a state of mind! Riley!".
