Risa's Story

I worked at Cwentral State (mental institution) in Norman for about 6 months after graduating, then felt I was ready for school. I started at OU, lived on my own on campus, and moved to LA in August of 73. I went to school in LA, studying theatre and art design. I worked in theatre on and off until I was 30ish. Had lots of other jobs along the way, and had lots of fun!!!!!! It was great to go someplace where no one knew me and I could just be me without the prejudices of people who thought they knew you just because they had been around you for years. I lived in LA for around 22 years. They were fantastic years, though not everything was wonderful. How could you appreciate the good if you don't have anything else? I got married when I was about 34 to a guy I met who was from Australia. We had two daughters; one was born in late 1988, and the other was born in 1992. They are both great kids and I love them dearly. My oldest is studying to be an architectural engineer, who hopes to be able to restore inner city buildings for low-income housing. She has also worked with the Americorps programs rebuilding homes in Louisiana, and wants to join the Peace Corps for a time when she is done with c...Expand for more
ollege. Her sister is heavy into horses and llamas. She currently trains llamas for a former teacher in the Vocational Agricultural dept of the high school she just graduated from. She will be joining the Montana Conservation Corps this spring, and then will be attending the University of Montana as an equine science major. Her dreams include having her own ranch and giving trail rides in the back country to people who have no idea what they are getting into. She also wants to raise llamas and show them, as well as using their fiber to make things with and sell. We moved to Connectiut in 1995 for my husband's job. Myself, I am still writing from time to time, making jewelry and doing non-profit work with native American groups and environmental groups. Besides the jewelry, I work with many other mediums, especially in the area of native arts. I have been working in the educational system here in the town I live in, but after 13 years of it, I am burned out by the BS and many of the kids and their parents. It is just too much. I am planning to move to New Mexico as soon as I can get everything straightened out here; that includes a divorce and selling the house. Next stop, New Mexico!
