Rita's Story
I began my high school years in Michigan. My class (63) was the first class to graduate from the new Madison High School campus if my memory serves me right. That was a big deal back then.
I lived in Madison Heights (on Brockton St.) many years beginning school at St Mary Magdalen in Hazel Park for all 8 years. My dad was in the Coast Guard stationed on the Detroit River base and was transferred around to all of the ships that were at the base at that time. Thus our lengthy stay in the area.
When in the 10th grade my family was moved to San Diego California. I consider myself a member of the Madison High and Clairemont High School classes. So many good things happened in both places. I cried my heart out when I left Madison Heights & then lost my heart to the boy next door in San Diego.
You wouldn't believe how hard I "fought" being a beach bum when I first moved to San Diego. I lived in a community called Ocean Beach & nearly "lost it" when I was forced to shed my wool socks for bare feet inside my tennies. I attended summer school between 10th & 11th to pick up courses recquired for drivers ed that weren't available in Michigan. I had the worst sunburn that summer not knowing my skin was sooooo sensitive to the Ca. sun. I learned to surf quick & spent every summer at the beach finially. ach, Crystal Pier and at the La Jolla Shores. Cruising in Jim's Matador Red & White '56 Chevy BelAir was also a favorite. He let me drive his baby sometimes too.
I did marry the boy next door when I lived on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. (Jim Watkins Clmt class of 62)) in 1964 and we moved back to Michigan for 3 or 4 years but the Ca. sun lured us with our 2 babies soon. By then, the Mich. winters were brutal on us.
Our son & daughter provided us with 4 grandchildren (2 boys and 2 girls). The oldest is Canton 18 & recent graduate at Chester HS in No. Ca. all 3 (Tajha, Jeremy & Jessica) of the others are now 15. Lisa, our daughter, had fraternal twins while our oldest a son, father of 2 & also a Jim, passed away at the age of 37 in 12/2003 after a 2 1/2 year battle with the dispicable disease, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. We are true advocates and active fund raisers to find a cause & cure for this deadly disease.
We have spent most of our married years right here in San Diego (Lakeside-30+ years). I retired after a heart attack last year & am waiting for Jim to "get around to it in a few years".
We were involved in Nascar racing and drag racing for a long time but now enjoy the "quiet" life. Boring but we have a few great stories to tell.
We hope we can catch up with more of our friends from school through Classmates.com.
