Jade Ritchie's Story

Life I took university to be essentially more of a learning experience than a stepping stone to a career. I took spoken languages, organic chemistry, microbiology, whatever spoke to me. Graduated with a B.A. in German with a minor in Mandarin. I'm still a software developer/architect but after too many mergers where each management group grasped less than the last, after more than two decades, I jumped ship to the software side of a green manufacturing company instead, and I love the people there. I got married October 15, 2005 at pretty much my dream place to have it: the Calgary Zoo conservatory. Married surrounded by tropical plants, reception in front of the butterfly garden, a wonderfully nerdy Struiksma-built cake with a books and garden theme topping it off in grand style. My wife was a high school science teacher, and we just suit each other to a T. We both have way more hobbies than time (though she's more hands-on, I'm more theory), both love gardening and as of this writing have a snake and two cats. We also made three children, as quirky and nice as we are. The eldest has a bent towards animation, the middle, towards math and virtual gadgets, the youngest, towards biology, pink and fighting :) My love of languages has come in handy for travel. In university, I went to China to do summer studies. I've been through Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali, Greece, Germany. With my now-wife, I've been to Switzerland (I actually won that trip - thank you, Garnier! We extended it for other parts of Europe) France, Italy, Austria, my homeland of Scotland, and East Africa on our honeymoon: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanza...Expand for more
nia (including Zanzibar). Travel, people, if you can! It really rounds you off as a person, especially if you don't totally isolate yourself from the local culture. The visceral memories of bad toilets and sore backsides from bad roads will fade in less than three months. I worry about things a lot less than I used to. That really is nice. I have a wonderful wife. Getting everyone together is a lot more likely to have schedule conflicts than it used to, mind you :) I still smile like a nut. I blog quite a lot these days - strange that I would get more passionate about things as I get older, but experiences really do contribute better backing to your thoughts as life goes on. I was adopted, and I know that my parents were art college students (it explains a lot, I know :). I got to meet my birth mother at last - she's nice! It's definitely got me a little closer to my adoptive mother, too. I still can't believe my half brothers are such jocks (and nice jocks, at that!). I committed to a giant life change and came out as transgender to everyone in late 2019. This has been literally decades in the works, my wife knew about it on our second date in 2000, and the near universal acceptance I found over the course of 2019 almost made a mockery of my fear. People I know: you are wonderful <3 I'd really like to catch up with a lot of my former IB classmates, but they did scatter to the wind, and cancelling the reunion in favour of the 100th anniversary of the school was... a mistake :) For those of you who didn't know that Yashail went on to become a professor of neurosurgery stateside, this is your notice :) Cheers!
