Rob's Story
"Retired from the USPS, Hyattsville Post Office, in 2009 after working there for 38 years. Started out as a clerk and moved up to a management position where I served in the role as a Manager, Customer Services, for 26 years. Some of my duties were to ensure delivery of mail was made to a possible 64,000 deliveries in the Hyattsville delivery area on a daily basis which included Hyattsville, West Hyattsville, Adelphi, Landover Hills, and Landover. Additionally, I had the responsibility of managing a large workforce which included at least 15 supervisors and 300 plus employees at times. I also worked on detail positions at several other offices outside of Hyattsville. Among some of those offices was the Lexington Park Office, the Jessup Post Office, and the Silver Spring Delivery Annex in which I was in charge of 101 carrier delivery routes. I went to the aforementioned annex with the goal of improving the manner in which it was being managed and to make it a productive office. I worked 13 hours a day implementing the plan that I was going to use – starting with the delivery supervisors. After getting them to follow and adhere to my plan, I engaged a group of carriers, clerks, and union shop stewards who collectively resisted my changes. To achieve my approved goal and acceptance of my plan, I met with the Silve...Expand for more
r Spring Postmaster. I shared my plan, and he authorized me to do what was necessary. The bottom line of my actions and plan resulted in the employees working within the unit’s plan, supervisors becoming more efficient at performing their duties, customer complaints were reduced, and the allotted workhours were substantially reduced. For those employees who resisted and caused problems, actions were taken to correct their performance and their productivity. I found myself working upwards of nearly 80 hours of work per week, but it was worth it (I received no extra pay for working extra hours). However, the wear and tear of working in this capacity eventually led to my retirement earlier than I had planned. The stress level was extremely high, and it wore me down. No regrets when I made the decision to retire. After retiring from the USPS, I started a landscaping business which I named "YARDISTRY LANDSCAPING." The stress level was almost non-existent, and I loved doing this type of work. I've been married for over 43 years to a great and caring woman. I have a daughter and a son, including one grandson. My wife retired a few years later too, after working as a Registered Nurse for 35 years at The Prince George's Hospital Center. I consider myself to be a lucky man, and I thank God for everything he has given me."
