Rob's Story
Life
This one, I think, is going to throw anyone who knew me off a little. In fact, I am sure some people are going to fall out of their chairs when they find out what career I have finally chosen.
Alright, I have been married for fourteen years and have a 11 year old daughter. After my mom lost her battle with lung cancer, I finally graduated high school (4 and 1/2 years) and moved back to California, where I was born and have many relatives. I was on my own and continued as a mechanic for about a decade. Although I knew from the start that I didn't want to do that forever, it was a good living for a 19 year old on my own. Eventually, I went into boating, construction and aerospace. In each of these careers I wound up training or managing, but never really saw myself retiring from them. Eventually, I decided that I needed a degree if I wanted to have more choices for careers, but I didn't know what, yet. Finally, I decided that a career in education would suit me and I could see me retiring from such a career. After becoming the first in my family to get a college degree, I went on for my teaching credential. From there I wound up teaching Social Studies and English in middle school. I did that for a few years and have since earned my masters degree from Pepperdine University and have become a principal at an elementary school in Westminster, CA.
Are you off the floor yet? I used to struggle sometimes lecturing 12-14 year olds and disciplining them for things I have said or done in the past. In a way, it even amuses me to be on my side of the desk. During that time I hav...Expand for more
e been lucky enough to be invited to chaperone the annual 8th grade Washington DC trip for 7 years. This is something we couldn't afford when I was growing up so it gives me great pleasure to see these kids get that opportunity.
What else, I live in Garden Grove, about 15 minutes from Disneyland. Trust me when I tell you that the real "OC" has little to do with the TV shows. I have a Great Dane named Samson. I have been an ice hockey referee for 13 years now. I mostly ref adult beer leagues now, but was very involved in youth hockey and have been lucky enough to have been invited to participate in local, state and national championships. My main focus in that field right now is as an instructor, training new and experienced officials in southern CA. In this endeavor I was fortunate to work with a few NHL refs. I also have a few of my students currently working minor pro leagues and that is very satisfying.
I am an avid boater and camper. Although I got my pilot's license a number of years ago, that hobbie became too expensive. I have friends who are pilots and occasionally get to go up with them. I even got to fly a twin engine plane to Chicago (Palatine, really). I hope to be able to return to that again, someday.
Meanwhile, I am concentrating on raising my daughter and continuing to advance my career. I am excited about being a principal next year and I would like to eventually pursue a doctorate degree from USC in time. I hope all who read this are well and if you want to get in touch, look up Willmore school in Westminster, CA and you will find a way to contact me.
