Rob's Story
I went to UNL for 5 years. Started in Chemistry, went back to the Trumpet. I received my degree in Music Education in 1978. Shortly after that I began a forgettable 5 year marriage that did produce one son. He is a drummer. 1978 - 1985 were spent working in an auto repair shop at 17th and Q streets. It no longer exists. Probably couldn't keep the doors open without me. :) I quit my job and went back to school with no money in the bank (remember the forgettable marriage?). I spent the next three years earning a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies. I was a TA during this time, which meant I had to take a full load of classes. By the time all of the classes I needed for my degree had been available, I had accumulated 60 hrs of graduate credit and three good years of college life. This will shock the _____ out of you... I was inducted into the National Music Honor Society, having been nominated by my Graduate Professors. At this time, I had become very proficient on the Trumpet in a variety of styles. (Even Polkas!!) Leaving UNL for the second time, i took my advanced degree (whoopee!) and new wife (this did not make her happy) and moved to Hyannis Nebraska, where I started my career as a Band Director. I have been at it 20 years now. I love it! I have taught in four schools now. Shelby, Madison and now Bennington (remember Hyannis?). I still play the Trumpet. I also play all of the band instruments, a necessary part of the job. Last fall (2007) I was inducted into the Iowa Rock and R...Expand for more
oll Hall of Fame! A jazz man in the rock band! The band I work with that brought that honor to me is The Smoke Ring. They were on TV when we were worrying about our 6th grade sweethearts. That makes me the young guy in the band! HA! I also have a 19 piece Big Band that plays Jazz of all styles once a month in Columbus, NE. I have been playing with and directing that band for 18 years. It is a very good band. I love to Bass fish and go as often as possible with my fishing buddy, who is one of the greatest band directors that ever wore the title, Larry Jones. Thank goodness he owns a boat! My oldest child, Noel, is living in Lincoln. My oldest daughter Elise, is a gifted dancer, flautist and singer who doesn't know what to do. (Sounds vaguely familiar.) Elise was in the All State Choir all three years that she could try out. She is 19 and will be searching for answers while taking classes. My youngest daughter, Grace, will be in 10th grade next year. She is flat out brilliant. Grace plays Trumpet in the High School Band and is very proud of that group and her playing. She is looking to be involved with animals or literature. Editing and publishing a magazine are on her to do list. My wife Leslie works with people who experience developmental disabilities. She is on the Governors Council and really knows her stuff. She is way smarter than me. That gets you up to 2008 for the most part. I just finished my first year at Bennington High School. It was awesome. I am NOT moving again!
