Rob's Story
Life
Live in San Diego with my girlfriend of of many years. Couple of dogs, canaries, a cat named Spider. Occupied most of the time with my business...one of those things where the hobby becomes the business so it's quite satisfying in that respect. Traveled nationally for many years in the consumer electronics and high technology fields. Still traveling but on a reduced schedule. No chopper - but I do have my eye on a couple of toys and am trying to make up my mind. Must be the approach to 60 to make me even consider such a ludicrous expense as an exotic German ragtop.
School
Well, the ancient historical facts are that I was a new boy as I entered my senior year at Bullard in Sept '65. Pretty shy, too, which didn't help me get into the "in crowd". I took a journalism class and Mrs. Bedford, the teacher of the class, announced to me that she was considering me for the editor of the school paper the following year. She seemed a bit surprised/chagrined when I told her I was graduating in June. We lived out in Fig Garden on Forkner. Just one street off Van Ness Extension where there were some significant homesteads the likes of which I'd never seen prior to moving to Fresno. Our house was a great house by my family's standards - nice swimming pool and big yards. Nicest we'd ever had. My dad managed the Chrysler dealership downtown. The family went back to the SF Bay area the summer I graduated. By then I had a girlfriend at McLaine High School and didn't want to leave - so registered for Fresno City a...Expand for more
nd started to grow my hair and play the guitar. I dropped one class (and my 2-S deferment) and by May I was a private in the US Army. Next time I was in Fresno the place was unrecognizable to me - and I would have been to it as well - at age 52. Biggest memory? Probably the night I took a beautiful girl from Bullard to the Dave Clark Five show. My first British rock band show.
Workplace
I own a small business. Most of the people I work with are subcontractors as I don't want the responsibility of employees. And this system ensures that everyone works at their maxium capability to keep their contracts in place. I have a warehouse and an office but I usually work from home. I have sales reps around the country and subcontracted accounting, technology support people, etc.
Military
Got lucky, really. Drafted in '65 out of Fresno City College. Entered the Army in May '65 and served through February '67. Got a 90 day early out to get back into college. I qualified for OCS (Officer's Candidate School) but when I heard the discouraging statistics on the life expectancy of 2d lieutentants in Vietnam I reconsidered and decided to stick it out as an enlisted man. Wound up going to a clerical program and spent about 17 months in central Thailand doing all kinds of odd jobs including as a jeep driver for military contractors and officers, keyboard jockey and hard core party monkey in the bars of downtown Korat. By the time I returned to the US at age 21 I was partied out, Army'd out and ready to be a grownup.
