Rishikavi's Story

Life Greetings, poetry lovers! (As Bullwinkle used to say; you'll have to forgive me--I live in L.A. and work as a writer in Hollywood.) Let me first invite you to visit my website, which you can find if you google my name. There you'll find my writings and more about me than you probably wanted to know. Here's an overview... I've taught yoga for over 30 years, have a broad background in metaphysics (I've met many great saints, including my beloved guru, Swami Satchidananda, the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa and others) and often give spiritual counsel to the needy amid the bohemian splendor of Venice Beach. I have been a professional astrologer for many years. Remember, it was the Wise Men who followed the stars who found the baby Jesus. I also am a Reiki practitioner (hands-on healing), and I teach Tantra. Yes, it's sometimes called the yoga of sex, but it is also a way to attune to the Spirit. I was well known in MI for my poetry (Gov. Blanchard gave me the title of "unofficial poet laureate of Michigan") and I performed at Pres. Bill Clinton's 1997 inaugural. Many have asked me what, as a professional astrologer, I see for the near future. First of all, there will BE one. The world will not end in 2012. But we have entered now into a period, exemplified by the troubled economy and much environmental stress, where over the next 15-20 years the major purpose behind events will be to create a harmonious global community out of our current shortsighted world. This is an important time. It will be bumpy and full of drama, and our ideals need to shift into more of a global-family perspective to make it all work. So stay centered; relax, and enjoy the ride! As for myself, throughout the '80s I had a lot of fun performing at the Michigan Renaissance Festival as Sir Pretense Past-Tense, the Court Bard. ("I was barred from more Courts than you can name!") Another highlight was my close involvement with the Romantic Futurists. A group of mystical creative artists, we staged 5-hour multi-media extravaganzas that featured poetry, music, dance, painting and other arts. There was a flowering of great art and spirituality in Michigan during this time, and the Romantic Futurists were the center of it. Perhaps some will also remember my many columns in phenomeNEWS, on social topics from a spiritual perspective. And my book, "The Lotus and the Dawn," a 108-stanza brief epic poem on world peace and spiritual harmony, was turned into...Expand for more
a successful multi-media stage show in both Chicago and Detroit. Two films I've written are coming to a theater near you, probably in 2009 or 2010. "Sweet Horizon" concerns a contemporary journey down old Route 66 by two young men in search of love and personal freedom. A romantic comedy with much to say about America, past and present, the tagline is: "Love is the Ultimate Journey." Another project is an adaptation of the book "Sound + Noise," by Curtis Smith. It's about love and loss and learning to love again, set in a small town in Pennsylvania. A lovely holiday film, la modern "It's A Wonderful Life." And then there's "Timeshared," an R-rated screwball comedy that could be described as "The Hangover" meets the Marx Brothers. Stay tuned for this one! Another project on the horizon is very close to my heart. "Rock'n'Roll Summit: When Elvis Met the Beatles," is about the legendary meeting between these musical giants. I love the Beatles, and always found it intriguing that I shared a birthday with John Lennon (October 9th) and that my name at birth was John Lerman. I've appeared in a number of TV shows and movies. (Rent "Jurassic Park 3" or "When Billie Beat Bobby" to see me briefly.) A book of my love poetry, called "The Song of My Heart's Desire," and a children's book/movie called "Faeryland" are also in the works. I am the recipient of many blessings. My spiritual teacher, Swami Satchidananda, was one of the great beings who brought yoga to the West in the 1960s. (He opened the Woodstock festival and you can see him in the film.) My long association with him has been a continuous blessing. I am single and do not have children, but my life and heart are full. I have been fortunate to love deeply in a number of different relationships, and women are important to me. I am a straight man inspired by the feminine. And I was miraculously reunited with my birth mother, Nancy Rogers, after 44 years. I now take care of her. So I have had much grace in my life, and remain very grateful for it all. Yes, I HAVE had many different names--you probably didn't know that I was adopted as an infant, and that it was only fate that brought me to Northville. Names are important, and mine is Indian, because of my yoga practice. But in L.A. I tell people "Just say Ra!" Hope it makes it easier for you! I am grateful for my upbringing in Northville, and wish everyone the best. May peace be with you all. --RA RISHIKAVI RAGHUDAS
