Robbie's Story

Life I joined the Army my senior year (‘77) with a guarantee to attend helicopter pilot training (of course if I washed out the Army could have done anything to me, can you say infantry?) I started training in January '78, and graduated as an Army Warrant Officer Aviator (Pilot) in February '79. I spent a year flying Hueys in the Korean Buffer Zone, then came home to Fort Hood, Texas (90 miles northwest of Austin) and flew the OH-58 Kiowa (Bell Jet Ranger). I earned a spot on the United States Helicopter Team in May of '81, and went to Pietrokov Trebanalski, Poland to compete with the Russians, East Germans, Poles, and a variety of western European nations. Our team won the individual and team world championships. The team was featured in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum for a couple of years afterward. I got out of the Army in January '82 as a Chief Warrant Officer and started working toward a degree and a commission in the Air Force. I graduated from the University of Texas with Special Honors in Psychology in May '85 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. I started Air Force pilot training at Sheppard Air Force Base, near Wichita Falls, Texas in January '86. I did well enough to get my second choice aircraft, an F-15 Eagle. I went to Fighter Lead-In Training at Holloman AFB, NM in February '87, then F-15 training at Luke AFB, AZ in May. About 3/4 of the way through Eagle training I discovered I had a g-tolerance problem. The F-15 has so much power that it can pull 9 g's for minutes at a time. I couldn't keep my blood pressure high enough to keep from "graying out" (blood drains from your eye's receptors). I never lost consciousness (black out) but you can't shoot down an enemy aircraft if you can't see it. After the initial disappointment of leaving the F-15 I settled into flying the C-141 Starl...Expand for more
ifter, a large, four jet engine cargo and troop transport. Oh, I almost forgot, I met my future wife at pilot training graduation. She was my best friend's sister. She came down for his graduation, met me, and one year later we were married. We spent four years at Travis AFB, CA (east of San Francisco). I loved the weather but California is way too crowded for me. During the Gulf War I flew my butt off, 700 hours in 7 months. I dodged a Scud missile over Dhahran but never took any direct hits. I flew in support of all three phases of the war, DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, and Operation PROVIDE COMFORT (Kurdish relief). I did a four year stint as an instructor at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. What a great town. I earned an MBA in Finance at the University of Colorado while I was there. My grad school entrance exam scores were high enough to qualify for Mensa (the High IQ Society), which was a real surprise. I was sent to southern New Jersey's McGuire AFB in January '97 and was promoted to Major (I attended the 20th PCW reunion in uniform). I flew the C-141 again, but as a part time pilot and full time Chief of Flight Safety. I was the chief for Headquarters 21st Air Force which covered airlift and air refueling operations for half the world. I flew a couple of missions in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (War on Terror) but I didn’t get shot at. I retired from the Air Force in July ‘02 and immediately starting flying for Southwest Airlines. With all the pilot lay-offs going on around the world I feel very fortunate to be with Southwest (they’ve never furloughed a pilot in their 30+ year history). Southwest has cracked the code for hiring good people, they make it fun to go to work. I’m based out of Baltimore (BWI) and live 15 miles northeast of Baltimore in Forest Hill (near Belair).
