Bob's Story

Short version of what has gone on since Van Buren years: Went to Queens College and graduated 1975 after having a blast while being on the swim and water-polo teams. Taught SCUBA diving and ran dive trips up and down the east coast and Carribean, then went into the life insurance business and have been a financial advisor ever since. Also have been an ocean lifeguard since 1974 at Jones Beach, and now at Robert Moses State Park (since 2009), working mostly weekends after two summers of full time. I think I've have done ok for a lifeguard and SCUBA bum. My wonderful wife Margaret, who I was married to for 28 great years, passed away April 2007 after a five year battle of stage 4 breast cancer. I have three terrific kids, all JB lifeguards too: oldest son is a Naval Academy (Annapolis) '06 grad, got a Masters from the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, CA in May '07, then served as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) on a guided missle destroyer, he was a Navy SEAL with Team 2 & 10 out of Little Creek, VA, completed second deployment to Afghanistan, after 9 months returned home Sept. 2012, got married Dec. 2012 to a Navy neo-natal care nurse, who graduated May 2012 from Georgetown with an MBA, her family all Navy too. They bought a house in Virginia Beach (Oct. 2013) and have fixed it up with new kitchen and one of the bathrooms, taking down a wall, etc. with lots of the tear down and wood working by my son. Son had Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from numerous contacts with the enemy while deployed both times. He has recovered completely and was back operational in December 2013. Great therapy for TBI at a special facility and program called NICOE...look it up, (also associated with the Fisher House if you feel like ever donating to a really great military cause) incredible results for our Special Operators in the military. My son was deployed to east Africa April 2015 for 7 months with his Team, prayed every day for his and his guys' safe return. Two years of shore duty as the OpsO NSW BTC, in charge of Navy SEAL training (250 SEAL instructors and approx. 750 candidates report to him. As of June 2018 XO of Team 2, Sept 2020 with family off to next assignment in Stuttgart, Germany on staff at SOCOM Africa, currently rank of Commander (CDR); daughter is an '09 grad of the Naval Academy, a SWO previously assigned to a guided missle destroyer out of Norfolk, VA (she was deployed off Somalia/Yemen for 6 1/2 months chasing pirates during 2010 as the division officer of the deck crew, then the auxiliary officer in charge of an engineering division, everything that moves other than the main propulsion units)...she was also stationed out of Pearl Harbor early 2012 through Sept. 2013 on a guided missle cruiser, flew to Korea to another ship mid-August 2012 to help with planning a special mission op, then back on Oahu enjoying Hawaii to the max. Shore duty in San Diego assigned as a Logistics Officer of the west coast SEAL Teams on Coronado. In early November 2014 she heard about a half-Ironman on Coronado on a Thursday and the following Sunday qualified for the October 2015 Kona International Ironman Championships in the Female Military category. Was 4th female age group swimmer out of the water at 2015 Kona Ironman, finished her 1st full, has done 12+ half and another full in Maryland, and one in FL, currentlyrank of LieutenantCommander(LCDR). Married mid-Dec 2017 to fellow USNA classmate and sailing team member. He was Weapons Officer on a cruiser out of San Diego, that was patrolling off NK. He's now an instructor of Surface and Anti-Submarine Warfare. My daughter working as west coast director of German firm that does special equipment testing for US industry, ; youngest son is Dec. 2010 graduate of CU/Boulder (English and History majors), expert snowboarder, great surfer, and archer, he shot a huge doe in Westchester County (Oct 2, 2013) with a recurve bow and cedar arrow I made up back about 20 years ago, and a monstrous 8-point buck (N...Expand for more
ov 15, 2014) with a new compound bow he purchased at a shop my hunting buddies have owned for 50 years. Many more big deer since, he's bitten by the bow hunting bug. As of sumer 2012 he started a food truck business with a high school buddy in Rockaway Beach. They fed 500 to 1,000 meals a day to locals, volunteers, and civil servants for three weeks working 16 to 18 hours a day right after Hurricane Sandy, hired by the Mayor's office for the advancement of NYC. His business partner (good friend since age 7) caused the food truck to be non-operational June 2013. He now is a welder & rigger for the NYC Dock Builders, bought a house with his girlfriend about a mile plus from me and they have a Golden Retriever pup since Feb 2017. They are now married, Sept 2019, just remodeled kitchen & dining room. I spend my weekends outdoors...Summer: lifeguard at Jones Beach/Robert Moses (44th summer 2018 and still making many real rescues). My ocean lifeguarding career has finally ended as I missed passing the annual re-hire swim by 0.24 second, had hurt my right shoulder on a rescue the previous summer and hadn't healed fully by re-hire.; Fall: hunt in Westchester with a longbow and wood arrows I make myself; Winter: ski instructor at Windham Mtn; Spring: getting ready for the summer. Also been ice climbing and mountaineering when ever the opportunity presents itself, which is usually every other year. With my business associate, Feb. 2011, bought an 1865 three-story Victorian for our offices and had it restored to its original look. Will post pictures of the building if I can become technologically capable of such a feat. I had been training Junior lifeguards for the 15 years thru summer 2013 and was also head trainer for the JB Jr Lfgd Competition Team. JB kids do incredibly well at local, regional, and nationals of United States Lifesaving Assoc (USLA) competitions. I also represented JB Lfgd Corps (500 guards) and New York State Lfgd Corps (1200) on each Executive Board, and equipment/uniform upgrades. As of the end of summer 2013 I have transferred all beach responsibilities to younger lifeguards, but will be consulting with them to make sure all goes well. After ski instructing 2013/14, right up to the weekend before surgery, I had both knees totally replaced March 6, 2014. Seems that all the great fun I have had over the years wore them completely out. It was really easy for me to recover and get back into shape with new bionic knees. By a month after surgery I had full extension and flexion in both knees, and with Physical Therapy had full strength back in my legs in about 6 weeks. Endurance and speed is a totally other story...have to work very hard on regaining that. Got in the ocean every chance I had during summer 2014, with fins and a bodyboard and kicked an hour solid each time to get all leg strength back. 12/13/14, 2014 skied the whole mountain and taught classes with no problems! 2014/15 ski season was fantastic with great snow conditions and my new knees allowed me to ski better than I had in 10 years. Somehow on May 9, 2015 I managed to pass the re-hire swim/run for my 41st summer at JB/RM lifeguarding on the ocean. Swim was no problem, but the run was the hardest and most painful thing I've ever done. Weekend of May 30/31, after two years of no surfing due to knees, got back on the kayak and rode some chest high waves and really enjoyed the heck out of it. Great to be back in pay status on the ocean. Passed annual re-hire 2016, 17 & 18 and was still making rescues. Not a lot of surf the past two summers, but totally a fun time with all my fellow lifeguards. Instructing skiing again (16th winter 2020/21 at Windham Mountain, volun-told into a pseudo supervisor position, in charge of ski-offs, assessing students skill levels, kids and separately adults, then assigning to groups with instructors, besides Instructing my own classes. Other than that, pretty quiet life, working to keep it all afloat and enjoying every day.
