Robert's Story
Life
I went into the Marine Corps in 1981 as an 03 Walk-Alot for three year (Rifleman). Then, I changed to Signals Intelligence as a Latin-Spanish Linguist and eventually became a Traffic Analyst.
In 1989, I became a Wire Chief when my security clearance was temporarily revoked.
In 1990, I married Laurel Ann Bunton of Laurel, MD, whom I met when stationed at the National Security Agency.
After deploying to SouthWest Asia as the Wire Chief for the 5th Bn, 10th Marines, I went to Marine Barracks Washington (also known as 8th & I) to write correspondence courses for the Marine Corps Institute.
In 1994, I changed to Small Computer Systems. After a tour in Okinawa working on the USMC Wide Area Network in the Far East, I went to the Enterprise Network Operations Center in Quantico to be the NOS Chief. After a few months, I was placed in charge of one of the two teams implementing f...Expand for more
irewall suites throughout the Marine Corps. I then became the #2 Network Security Engineer in the USMC Enterprise NOC. In 1999, I left the Corps to become a civilian contractor with Smartronix doing the exact same job I was as a Marine; just with increased salary and respect.
I left Smartronix in October 2000 for a year with a Boston-based company (Cignal Global Communications) as a Senior Network Engineer. It was an interesting year providing Customer and WAN support on a civilian global ATM/router based network. The company merged with a subsidiary of UPC to become Priority Telecom (based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in November of 2000. In September 2001, Priority Telecom shutdown all non-European operations.
I'm back as a Senior Network Security Engineer with a Network Security Contracting company (Smartronix) out of California, MD. I can be reached at baker.rp at att.net
