Robert's Story

Life Married to the same wonderful lady for over 51 years. Son, 50, has completed his teaching certificates to make a career change. Unfortunately, teaching has become a shrinking profession. His first career change was to go into Restaurant Management but that didn't work out. So he has completed all his Microsoft Support classes and is now a computer technical support specialist. He is a Support Manager for a local computer support company providing computer and technical support on several of his own accounts. After 40 years, I have retired from working as a Geophysical Consultant through my own company. Doing oil and gas exploration for various companies around the world was a lot of fun. Worked in places like Australia, North Africa, West Africa, Middle East and India. Now I'm full time retired, we are traveling (Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Republic of Slovakia, Austria, Hungary) and working on airplanes. Been flying since 1962. Completed building my first airplane, a Europa XS, in January 2009. I began work on my second airplane, a Little Toot sport Biplane, in late January 2009. The aircraft has been completed and inspected. Took a break from my project to help my friend complete his Big Toot project. It is flying now so we'll go back to work on my Toot. Big Toot was flying in 1st quarter of 2019. It made it to AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI at the Experimental Aircraft Association National Fly-In at the end of July 2019. When we returned we went to work completing my Little Toot called The Tasmanian Devil. The Devil first flew at the end of 2019. The China Virus thing has made a mess of 2020 but Mo and I have let it impact us as little as possible. We have continued to attend Mass, shop and eat out as usual but wearing those stupid masks as required. Thank goodness our Governor has removed the mask mandate and opened the state. We have had our China Virus shots. This February (2021) we lost power, had to move in with our Son's family for several days during which time North Texas had a record setting cold spell. With no power, -5ºF (-20ºC) temperature and with water running at several sinks in the home, our tankless hot water heater froze and blew up. When power was restored the next day we came home to water in the family room, kitchen, dining room, sunroom, master bedroom and master bath. What a mess. But we are only one of 100,000 families in North Texas who have had the same thing happen. At least we can live in our home for now. Our insurance company has been helping but the needs are overwhelming. Looks like it will be 6 months before we are back to something approaching normal. After a month living in the wrecked home and 13 weeks living in a hotel (nice hotel, but still a hotel). we are back in our home. We moved back in on 1 July and have spent the last few wee...Expand for more
ks working to put things back together. Still not there yet. The master bedroom isn't ready and probably won't be till the end of the month. The insurance company has spent almost as much in repair work as what it cost to build the home 40 years ago. I'll post some pictures of the repaired areas. Took 6 weeks to get the bedroom repairs finished. And another month to get it all back together. Bought a new Pickup truck in September. Pictures have been posted. This year we were able to do a great Thanksgiving dinner with close friends. Picture posted. Started posting an early Christmas picture. More to follow as December moves on. Been a lot of moving on as it is now past Easter. Moved the Tasmanian Devil from Denton Airport to a small grass strip NW of Krum, TX where we can work out the last few new-plane issues. I'll post a link to some video of it flying if I can get Tommy to capture some decent stuff. You can search you tube (rlborger) for videos. Maureen and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary this month (9/22).. Been a wild ride and mostly a fun time. Posted some new photos. With our friends and our son who came and helped us decorate for Christmas. Maureen with Mini & Lily. Lee with Mini. Relocated my airplanes to a new airport when the city raised the rent for the 3rd year in a row (after 12 years of steady rent $$$). Now flying out of Bird Dog Airfield (E58) a 3000'x250' grass runway. Added pictures of the Emmylou Harris concert at the Longhorn Ballroom. GREAT time! Work on the installation of a solar farm in the quarter section immediately west of Bird Dog has been a mess. Lots of flying dirt and noise. The airplanes were covered in dirt in spite of being in the hangar so we had an afternoon wash session. Water went on the aircraft and mud rolled off. They are clean for now. I'm just waiting for some decent flying weather. Been months of rain, cold, low clouds, wind. Very unlike north Texas. Rain soaked the turf runway, takes a week to dry out, then a week of 20-25 knot wind followed by another round of rain. Gotta have some decent flying weather one of these days. Finally had some good flying days. Managed to get some flying in before a new set of tailwheel issues arose. Spent the last 3 months putting a new tailwheel spring on the Devil. Finally have the geometry set right and taxi testing went well. After the taxi tests I parked the airplane outside to give it a wash. (Pictures posted) Then went down to Tommy's hangar to help him with his Big Toot. He is also having tailwheel issues and he will have to rebuild the underside of the aft end of BT in order to install a new tailwheel. Tommy is also in the process of building a new Little Toot. (Pictures posted) Too bad the weather isn't cooperating for flying right now. But, that's OK, because we really need the rain. More later...
