Robert's Story
Life
Up throught 1976 I worked with Uncle Pat McGrail in the metal fabricating business in Parkesburg. I moved to California and went back to college. In 1980 I graduated from U.C.Berkeley with a dual major in metallurgical and mechanical engineering. Subsequently, I traveled quite a bit overseeing safety-related upgrades to nuclear power plants all over the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In 1984 I became self-employed as a consulting engineer and later became licensed as a metallurgical engineer in California.
I feel fortunate in having the opportunity to have worked in various challenging fields including nuclear, aerospace, biomedical and more recently forensic engineering (which is mostly what I do now). Forensic engineering involves "making the broken bits tell the story" when there are accidents or failures that cause significan economic loss, injury, or loss of life.
I am still doing that to this day after 25 years "in the trenches" out here in "Silicon Valley" (San Jose, C...Expand for more
A) where semiconductor manufacturing, rocket science, and biotech are the main acts.
I married Marilyn van Wichen in 1987. Marilyn was born in Amersterdam (Holland) and she immigrated with her family when she was about 10 years old. Her father was a Fulbright exchange teacher. We are still married and have managed to travel a bit.
The big news with us is that 5 years ago we bought a second home in Trinidad, California - up on the north coast about an hour south of the Oregon border. The house is right on the ocean and has beautiful views of the ocean from a rocky coastline. The place was a real fixer-upper (which why we could afford it). Bob Hertzler and I still hang out together (he lives near here, just south of San Francisco). Bobby is experienced in construction has really helped us work on the place. Class of '67 sticks together! Our plan is to move up there in another year or two when we finish repairing and remodeling the place.
Love to all, Buck Cargill
