Bob's Story

As you can see by the photo there are times I'm "all wet". For the past three years I've been the principal of Pathfinder Elementary in Fremont, MI; home to Gerber baby food. Prior to moving to Fremont I taught in Bridgeport, MI and lived with my wife Penny (Nichols)in Birch Run, MI. Our four kids are grown & the youngest, Ben, lives here with us. The photo is of me in the dunk tank during our annual Spring Carnival; there was still plenty of snow on the ground & the tank was outdoors. So far, administering a whole building and working with everyone from custodians & teachers to students & parents is a pretty great gig!Everyday is different and challenges are frequent, as you might imagine-especially during flu season! But the rewards of seeing upclose the successes that occur on a daily level are worth every effort. Growing up I had aspirations of being a fighter pilot or an FBI agent, not a teacher-let alone the principal! I kept trying to escape school-not work in one! But when life took a crazy turn I discovered that I really enjoyed working with kids and I'm good at it. It sure beats working as a plumber ...Expand for more
or driving trucks-which I did! Both my dad (1994)& step-dad(2009)have passed away. Mom still lives in Bridgeport. She & my step-dad used to visit my classroom there quite regularly; bringing treats for the kids, who seemed to enjoy the visits. Penny & I have both been married before & get along alright with our exes. We met at our ten year reunion, danced a little, chatted alot, and have been doing both steadily for the past twenty years. Penny & I enjoy fishing; there are so many good lakes around Fremont & we own a small (14')boat. There are also many paved and not so paved hiking & biking trails, as well as the national forests & the Muskegon River nearby. We live across the street from a great theater. The high school symphony presents programs there. John Berry the singer has performed there; as have many other famous & near famous performers. There are lots of churches around here and we've joined the Wesleyan. Both of us are active in Sunday school; Penny works with the worship design team; I'm a worship leader during vacation bible school; and we both enjoy spending time with our small-group friends.
