Bob's Story
Life
For the past 7 years I've been teaching elementary kids in Bridgeport. Beginning this year I will be the new elementary principal in Fremont, Michigan, which is about 3 hours west of Birch Run. Of course my wife of 17 years, Penny Nichols, will be moving with me, as will our 16 year old son Ben.
Penny's lived in our Birch Run home for the past 21 years so you can imagine the moving sale! The rest of our kids, Nick (truck driver) & Dan (Air Force) Dymond, & Karee Cassiday (accounting major at SVSU) are enjoying their individual lives and will vacation with us when they can.
Penny & I are very involved in both our church as well as professional organizations, meaning we'll be looking for both opportunities in our new town. Fortunately there is a large fishing lake in town which will look even better with my boat on it, so there is at least one more thing to do which I enjoy tremendously.
Being a teacher provides me with many excellent opportunities to learn about & collect many things. Social studies, especially geography & history are my favorite topics so travelogues & biographies make up most of the library. Music is a phenomenal teaching tools as wel...Expand for more
l as my own version of psychotherapy. So, as you might imagine, I have a very large collection of various genres and styles which I've shared regularly with my students.
Workplace
Before I became a pipefitter and travelled the country for 13 years working on steel mills and refineries I was a garbage man. For 2 years it was work until the truck was full and take home all the good things one can find!
After breaking my knee cap while on vacation in '93 I "retired" from construction and enrolled in the teaching program at Saginaw Valley State University. By the time I graduated with a BA in elementary education in '99 Bridgeport had hired me to teach 2nd & 3rd grade. Since then I've taught all the elementary grades except kindergarten (that's a tough gig) and earned a master's degree in administration plus began studies for a doctoral degree.
This latest course work will be put on hold as I begin my first job as a principal in Fremont. Pathfinder Elementary is a 1st-3rd grade building set in a park like area and staffed with very knowledable and professional educators for about 530 kids. Our new home is within walking distance about 2 miles from the school.
