Robert's Story

Life From the Summer of '98, I lived near Ft. Worth TX, flying 50-seat jets for the Delta Connection. That same year, I met a U.T.-Martin grad student named Amy Campbell. We fell in love fast and were married in December '98. In March 2002, we had a son and named him Robby. In May of 2003, we got a surprise: little John Michael. When Delta decided to transfer our jets from Dallas to Atlanta, Amy and the boys and I packed up and moved to Knoxville. We got another suprise in April of 2005: this time a girl named Sarah Joy. We're not far from Bearden H.S., and the family's adjusting to the move pretty well. It's good to be back, in a lot of ways! School Does anybody else remember sitting in the cafeteria before the day started, frantically trying to finish the last night's homework? Good grief, if only I'd just done the work! I wasted a lot of time in high school being a schmuck! I don't have a whole lot of regrets, but if I could go back knowing what I know now, I'd have had a LOT more fun... College I spent my first year still thinking I wanted to be the next Ed Bilbrey. Band was a lot of fun, but after beating my head against music theory classes for a while, I gave up and decided I really wanted to be a pilot after all. ...Expand for more
Most airlines don't care what your degree is in, so I chose Geography because I enjoy making and interpreting maps...did very well at it, too, if I must say. Graduation was in '94. Workplace I got hired in the Summer of '98 when ASA needed lots of pilots quickly and would take anybody who'd taught at FlightSafety. Started in the right seat of the Brasilia (30-seat turboprop), upgraded to Captain at the beginning of 2000, then transitioned to the CRJ-200 (50-seat jet) a year after that. Working as an airline captain is the most fun I've had with my clothes on. There's just nothing like it in the world! Military I worked with the world's only honest recruiter, SSG Victor Arias in Maryville TN...made the transition to soldier a breeze. Before I even finished Basic, I was building my application packet for Warrant Officer Flight Training. After AIT (Ft. Gordon, GA) I was assigned to the 54th MED CO (AA) at Ft. Lewis as an avionics technician. I was there for less than a year before being selected for flight training. Got to Ft. Rucker just in time for the govt. to eliminate 50% of all flight training. I was stuck, but the C.O. of the Warrant Officer School offered me a chance to get out and pursue flying as a civilian...I took it.
