Robert's Story
Hi fellow Bear alumni:
It's been 37 years since we graduated, meaning we're all about three times as old as we were then. Pretty amazing.
I don't know about y'all (the way we tah-lk hear in Texas) but I had no clue, or not much of one anyway, about what I was going to do after high school and then college. So it's been an experience, a journey certainly.
Here's the brief version. Write and give me yours. Would love to hear from some of you and compare notes.
I've been living in Arlington, Texas for 9 years now, working for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper as a business/investigative reporter. Twenty nine years in the newspaper business with prior stops in Wichita, Kan. (1988-1999), Bakersfield (1981-1988) and Tulare (1979-1981).
Graduated from Cal Poly SLO in 1976. Got married first time, had a couple of kids Stayed in California until 1988 when I moved to Wichita, Kan. for what was supposed to be a short stop on the life journey. It turned out to be a long detour, something of a train wreck, although in the end a lot of good things eventually came of it including a great seocnd marriage.
This last stop, in Texas, has been the most interesting, or maybe that's because I don't remember a lot of the past. Work has provided some great travel opportunities. Spent a week in New York City after 9-11 covering the a...Expand for more
ftermath. That was quite an experience. Been to Washington D.C. several times. Paris (France, not Texas) three times and London four. (Toto we're not in Arvin or Kansas anymore!). Great experiences. Long days, lot of work, but interesting tourism and some great eating and drinking.
My wife Sharon and I have been able to vacation in France in 2001, seeing Paris, the D-Day beaches at Normandy, and a day or so in Brussels, Belgium (great beer and chocolate) while my oldest daughter was working there for the summer. And in 2004 Sharon and my youngest daughter came along to London and Scotland (love that single malt Scotch) prior to a work assignment.
Married the second time in 1997 to Sharon Walker of Wichita, Kan. a clinical social worker. She's in private practice here in Arlington. My daughters are now grown. Sarah, 27, is a family law attorney in San Jose, and Christina, 22, a recent graduate of New York University is now learning how hard it is to live and make a living in The Big Apple. They are my proudest accomplishment in life so far, having turned out to be pretty good, smart kids.
I typically get out to California every year or so for business or vacation, sometimes mixing the two.
I would love to hear from some other old Arvin grads, especially if you know of any living in this part of world. Please write.
