Robert's Story
After I graduated Sylmar High in 1972, I continued to play in bands at dances, etc. I also attended California State University, Northridge for a year then quit. I started working a series of 'day jobs' to keep it together so I could study music, and this happened all through the 70s. I began moving the opposite direction of jazz in the '70s which was ruled by the jazz/rock fusion and eventually 'funk' jazz, then 'nice' jazz, elevator music. Since I had already studied Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in the 60's, I wanted to attain higher, more advanced levels in my jazz/improvisational studies which took me past the Charlie Parker/Sonny Rollins into the John Coltrane/Eric Dolphy studies.

almost destroying me! The whole guilt/terror dynamic was something I just had to get away from.
I went underground musically as I entered the 'new music' area of avant-garde improvisatioalill unknown outside of the community, and other fellow 'fast' guitarists (Rick Zunigar, Michael O'Neal, Eddie Van Halen) all achieved vast fame and fortune in more marketable genres.
In May 1974 I experienced the first of what would be several episodes with mental illness that were tantamount to nervous breakdowns. This happened just months after being 'born again'. However, my response was to delve ever deeper into the study of music, and actually managed to discover new things about the guitar.
I think I'd like to be remembered by my friends as being the best undiscovered guitarist ever.
