Robert's Story

John Glenn HS is a fuzzy blur to me now. I attended two high schools, JGHS (1969-71) & Crestwood (1967-69), but went to school with those guys from 1963 until we moved. I really cannot remember a lot about JGHS, but Crestwood remains crystal clear. This is why I have not attended any of our reunions, but I did go to the 30th for Crestwood and had a great time..... still I graduated from JGHS and there WERE good times, so hello to you all!!! I have been sort of a drifter, like many of our generation. I was always going to do SOMETHING and then suddenly, I was 50.... now 63. I worked on the Alaska Pipeline, then worked for the Johnson car washes. Always considered the Johnson's a second family, though I lost touch with them in the 70's. I married the girl I dated through our Senior year, the marriage ended after the death of our only child to Rhyes Syndrome in 1978. I blame the break-up on me. Lost and devastated, working as a truck driver, a friend introduced me to a young girl that had "something" about her. She was also a graduate of John Glenn(1978). I caught that "something" in October of 1979 and in November, we celebrate our 37th anniversary. We moved to Houston, where I eventually became a minority partner in an Isuzu dealership. "Joe Isuzu" was patterned after me and I received some recognition for that. We then started an auto transport business and traveled everywhere in the U.S. & Canada delivering specialty cars..... even turned down the contract to haul the Oscar Meyer "Weinermobile". We moved to south Florida in 1990 to be near Debbie's parents who had moved there. I tried selling cars, but the "spark" was gone, so I became a dog groomer, opening a series of grooming and supply shops. During this time we found the world's rarest dog breed, the "American Hairless Terrier" and worked with that for many years. We still have 8 dogs, but 4 are very old now. We sold dogs around the country and world, mostly into Asia. I traveled to Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand & Indonesia with these dogs. We formed strong friendships with our Asian friends and I now travel there for vacations, having ceased working with dogs. My best friend is a Malaysian of Indian extraction. Believe me, I can tell some really great stories of our exploits! We moved to a very rural 25 acre property in...Expand for more
north Florida in 2002. Our plans were to create a "free range", "all natural" poultry farm and we have succeeded..... or HAD succeeded. AN error that I cannot elaborate on as part of the settlement, placed our Suwannee River property nearly four feet LOWER than we thought. In April of 2009, there was a major flood that essentially destroyed the poultry business. All we are left with is a really beautiful piece of property... and it's mortgage that the chickens were supposed to pay for! The heat & humidity there is obnoxious and we were solidly in the bible belt, as well as living in a place where guys see a family reunion as a great place to pick up chicks and how many Falcons you can have on blocks in your front yard is both a status symbol & a sign of "wealth"! So in March of 2010, we moved everything to the desert near Terlingua, TX. We have 20 acres there and are building an "off the grid" fully sustainable life out there. We grow most of out food, produce all our water & electricity and even compost our waste products, ALL of them! Our poultry flock is rebuilt and my YOUTUBE channel:"ecoranchusa" has had over 300,000 views. I regularly get phone calls from around the world asking about the care & feeding of small to medium poultry flocks. Our property s a showcase of sustainability that is open to visitors who are interested in this "New Homesteading" lifestyle. Our home, built from empty bottles:: "Casa De Bottellas, Terlingua", is one of the largest bottle homes in the world. We were featured on the National Geographic channel's "Doomsday Preppers", though it did not go as we had hoped and now reject further reality TV appearances. At 63 I am "blessed" with near perfect health. I weigh what I did in High School, watch my blood pressure and live a fairly quiet life now that I am retired. "Retired" is a relative word, as I still put in a 6-8 hour day working on the property! It could have gone either way when my son died and my life collapsed. But my LAST wife, Debbie made all the difference! I hope all who read this can find their "soul mate" and work through life as we are!!
