Robert's Story
Robert Eberhart is an associate professor of organization sociology at the University of San Diego's Knauss School of Business. His publications have appeared in journals such as Research in the Sociology of Organizations, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, and the Journal of Asian Business Studies. He was the director of research for Stanford University's project on Japanese entrepreneurship and an assistant professor at Santa Clara University. He also has a visiting faculty appointment at Oxford University in the Space Economy project, is a visiting faculty at Kobe University in Japan, and is a research associate at Columbia University's Center for the Study of Japanese Business.
Prof. Eberhart received his Ph.D. in Management Science from Stanford University. He also holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Michigan after undergraduate studies in Finance at Michigan State University.
Dr. Eberhart served as the co-chair of the US Department of State's and METI's Japan-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council, where he created innovative policy recommendations for the two governments, resigning in November 2016. He was an academic advisor to the Green Bay Packers, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, the Japan Innovation Council, and Japan's Board of Directors Training Institute. Professor Eberhart received awards from the Academy of Management, the Responsible Research in Business Management 2020 Paper Award, the Wiley-Blackwell Best Dissertation Award (finalist), the Fondation du Japon et France, the National Aerospace Manufacturers Accreditation Program, the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce, and is recognized for work on the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Lab where he designed and built interferometer components for an exo-planetary detection system.
From 1999 - 2007, Dr. Eberhart founded and served as CEO of WineInStyle, a venture capital-funded company in Japan that developed a solution that radically shortened the supply chain for wine distribution in that country that is still Japan's leading distributor of California wines.
Robert was previously President of the Japan subsidiary of Plantronics Inc., and he held engineering management positions at Applied Materials Corp. and Performance Semiconductor Corp., where he led the team that manufactured the world's first operating R4000 RISC chip.
He is a resident of Palo Alto, California, where he lives with his wife of over forty years - the former Delores Walton (Parkside 1975), who is a dentist in Palo Alto - and has three grown children: Nathan - a physician, Max - a technology startup executive, and Claire - a botanical researcher. He is a private pilot, sports car restorer, boat builder, amateur astronomer, and gourmet chef.
